Team-BHP - Driving Licence confiscated for violating 'No Parking' zone

This is excessive and arbitrary. First you have a fine that is too less to be of any deterrent. Then you have a knee jerk reaction to the mess you created and you go to the other extreme.

The fines/penalties should be calibrated to achieve the desired purpose.
This looks more like a "hate" penalty rather than a properly judged move.
The idea should be to nudge people in the right direction rather than harassing people.

Increasing the fine to where it really starts pinching ( 5000 Rs ? ) and a points based approach like some countries have should be the way to go.

Another golden pot for traffic cops. Many cases, the definition of no parking zone itself is ambiguous and many times, they fine with out any clear violation. So, now how do you know a particular street is a parking allowed street or no parking zone? Is it like, if there is no explicit 'Parking allowed' board, they will treat it as no parking zone?

What will happen if they could not find the driver? Do the driver have to go by himself to the traffic police \ RTO office to turn in his license?

Well I had this experiene may be some 5 years before on New BEL road near Ramaiah College.

I was sitting on the driver's seat parked along the pavement opposite to a More store (this was not a No Parking road earlier)while my wife went in to buy groceries.

A traffic constable walks to my window and asks me to move the car for which I ask him if this road has a "No Parking" sign. He asks me to talk to "Sahebru" Sitting on his Pulsar few meters away.

I get down, walk to him and ask the same - "Where is the No Parking Sign?".

He replies - " Do you have a habit of reading news papers?" To which I say yes.

So he replies that recently there was a gazette notification making this road (New BEL Road) a No Parking zone and hence no Boards are installed to let people know about this rule.

So people - Time to read even obituary,Tender invite notifications and Auction of confiscated items by lenders in newspapers without skipping a page!!!

The decision to cancel the license should be backed with videography evidence. Police giving ticket and confiscating license should videograph the violation as proof of the offense.
Without any such mechanism this will really give huge power to police to leverage higher bribes.

Quick question, how many people actually carry the original DL with them when they are driving? I have seen loads of them get a color photocopy of the DL and then get that laminated and carry it. I do both, I keep a photo copy in the dash of the car and carry the original with me.

In case the person being fined is not carrying his original DL, how will the whole process work? What will the police confiscate? The vehicle itself?

Once we got a "illegal parking" traffic ticket via post, even though the car was parked in valid parking zone. The line had faded, and the cop took advantage of it. Few months later, the tar was relaid, and parking lane lines were repainted. It is again a visibly valid parking spot.

I transferred my M800 to Kolkata in Oct 2009. One day when I checked the BTIS fines online and saw a Rs 100/- fine for using mobile while driving in Dec 2009 .The car was in Kolkata at that time with a WB registration mark.

I never paid the fine and it disappeared from the BTIS system after 4 years.

If you look at the Hindu article on this you'll notice how the number of 'no parking' cases are the highest (almost 10x the second highest). This'll be like one of those knee-jerk reactions we've had in the past: such as the sun-film ban. Let this drama run its course out for a few weeks and the low-on-manpower traffic police department will go back to their regular low-hanging fruits.

I, for one, am eagerly waiting for the deprecation of the Motor Vehicles Act (its archaic fines, etc.) in favour of Road Transport and Safety Bills. Once active, it promises a lot of good laws we've all been hoping for in various posts in these threads (amongst which are stringent license tests and a central registration database).

Already started happening! Someone I know paid a "fine" of Rs- 350 for parking in a no parking zone.

Strangely this fine didnt come with any receipt! :uncontrol

Small violation = big punishment (DL cancel) for normal citizens.

Fair enough.

When will Bengaluru's Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B Dayananda announce that if a traffic policemen will be caught taking bribe, no suspension, no termination, no inquiry. He will be put behind bars for 15 years.

If rules are to be more strict, lets do it for all.

But how can someone agree to pay fine without getting receipt! It would directly go in to their pocket as bribe.
