Looking at the condition of things, I don't think we can even try to imagine about the position of a single lever or any other thing to be in a position as it was before falling in. Everything is in shreds!

AFAIK, these buses have a small lever somewhere at the right side of the steering which is like a toggle switch kind of apparatus and needs to be switched for applying/releasing handbrake. It works hydraulic or air assisted.

Handbrake? Panic action?

Poor man: can't imagine the terror he must have felt.

Gone in 10 seconds !!

44 year old Kangra bridge collapse,Himachal,India ; Aug 11, 2016

Good lord, there were no injuries or fatalities !

This unfortunate incident which happened in broad daylight is itself so terrifying, can't even imagine how the Mahad bridge collapse on Bombay--Goa highway in MH would have been as it was an even more massive disaster because the portion of bridge involved was easily 3 times that of the bridge seen in the above video with all the frigthening sequences of events unfolding on a dark rainy night. On top of all this, 2 buses and ?1 car with so many people resigning to their (ill)fate for being a part of that cruel ''moment'' ! Didn't you also read in the news the Savitri river was infested with crocodiles ?? May be the water current in Savitri river was not this fierce but the tragedy is unfathomable. Hope some people amongst them are still alive somewhere and may the poor souls of those who departed rest in peace. Amen

Just wondering how handbrake of such a heavy vehicle works? Couldn't be the case that by applying handbrake would have made that bus uncontrollable and hence not being able to stop in time?
It is possible that neither the driver nor the rescue authorities applied the handbrake. It must have been engaged accidentally during the fall; for example, the driver's knee hitting the lever.

The second ST bus has been recovered from the river some 500 meters down the river. No bodies were found in the bus. The possibility of finding the remaining bodies is next to nil now.

Only the Tavera is yet to be found now. Most likely the search and rescue operation would be called off once the Tavera is located.

Give any news and TOI takes out content and finds out innovative ways to sensationalize the same.

From the eyewitness account mentioned in opening post, it is clear that vehicles fell in to river when bridge collapsed under it. There was no news about bridge falling off first and vehicles driving off it.

What is the point? It is just a waste of public resources and an unnecessary risk to the searchers to find the vehicle now. These searches should be done when lives can still be saved, or, as in discovery of aircraft, there are potential consequences for the future.

Finding the buses was important because 15-16 bodies are still missing and there was a speculation that possibly those would be found trapped inside the buses.

Heart goes out to the families where the victims did not even get a proper burial. But, I understand your point. It doesn't make sense being adamant about it and continuing it for ever. The authorities are possibly doing it just to avoid a backlash from the impacted families.

Seems the missing Tavera is also found and efforts are on to bring the vehicle up.
As per the article two bodies are trapped inside the car.

Thank you for that news.

I do understand that there are not only emotional/religious reasons for families to get the bodies of their dead, if possible, but also major potential legal hurdles involved in doing the necessary re death without a body.

I read the news that the search operation has been called off after the wreckages of the two buses and a Tavera have been removed from the river last week. The search for the missing people will continue at local level.

BTW, has anyone come across the pictures of the wreckage of the second bus?

Here. Second bus MH 20 BL 1538 Jaigad--Mumbai seemed to be in a more wrecked state. Check out this news clip from tv9 Marathi and the image below. The bus was pulled out at night.
