Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I have had a different experience in Mumbai-Pune expressway - they charged Rs. 117 at both toll plazas on 2 occasions (Mumbai end and Pune end). On a separate occasion, they only charged Rs. 117 for the whole trip. The actual toll is Rs. 195. Besides, the operator tends to ask for cash unless he is pushed to check the scan for FastTag, I often have had to shout on him to do his job and call his supervisor, and then, miraculously, the gate opens and I am allowed to go !

Interestingly, just 3 days ago I received an SMS for another recent toll debit after which the balance was Rs.55.10 so I was wondering why the balance isn't just 0.10 instead of Rs.95.60. Logged in to the account to see that it's due to the cash back that was credited a day before.

Given that some tolls are taking about 2 months to debit the account, wondering what would happen if the tag does not have sufficient balance at the time of debit ? If they had the ability to do a "hold" at the time of passing through the toll, probably this problem can be avoided.

ETC Compliant RFID facility in all new cars!

According to Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, government will promote digital transactions at toll plazas.

The Ministry of road transport has told manufacturers to include ETC-compliant RFID facility (Read FASTAG) in all new cars.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Today there is this news on Times of India.

Please find the link to the news article.

Quoting part of the news item:

Quote:
"So, as far as toll plazas are concerned, the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways is advising vehicle manufacturers that in all new vehicles, the manufacturers must provide Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) facility," Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das told reporters here.

He said the provision of Electronics Product Code Global Incorporated (EPCG)-compliant RFID facility in all new vehicles will ensure payment of toll digitally and also avoid the waiting time, and the vehicles will move seamlessly without having to wait at check posts.
As per the news item, this initiative shall be extended to all motor vehicles and not only to cars. This shall be a good move, provided the toll plazas strictly implement the RFID and non RFID lanes.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

^^ Feel this is not a useful move in any case.

Already cars from 2014 has this RFID tags attached, it is not used since for ICICI it is easier to give out a tag by charging a small amount (Rs. ~200). RFID fixing is not a complex thing to be done, unlike say ABS or airbag and can be done after purchase by anyone.

In case of a corrupted RFID or you requiring your windsheild getting refixed, it is easier to just get another new RFID from the bank rather than sending your vehicle details to manufacturer and waiting for them to send you another RFID with same details.

As a FASTAG user, I would be happier if goverment pushes toll plazas listed as that supporting tag payment to start accepting the same. We have lots of toll plazas which are listed as FASTAG active, but do not accept FASTAG.

Just got this SMS. Thanks to waiver of toll fee, I don't think there will be any impact due to this though.

http://www.livemint.com/Politics/C3J...-December.html

Now toll waiver extended to 2 December plus old 500 notes will be accepted from 2nd to 15th December.

Must say, entire GoI and expecially MoRTH are handling this with an agility I did not expect.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I went twice to EC to get the Fastag

Day 1: Saturday - Saar, saarvaar is down, come on maanday!

I take his phone number

Day2: Monday comes - no response as phone is switched off. Very little traffic so I drive over. No sign of the executive but server is still own

Day 3: I ring helpline - server is down but suggested I try tonight

Good luck with that!

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

How much time does one need to get FASTag activated? I need to go to Chennai by car on 22nd December.

Also, is the ICIC branch at Hosur Road the only place to get it in Bangalore? If so, that's very inconvenient.

Nov 29th 12:00 hours is over, but still server is down !!!

IMPO, the FASTag website was good enough and very detailed that a customer need to know/transact. Not sure what new stuff they will bring with this maintenance/upgrade work. Let's see.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I have decided to opt for FASTag (currency crunch, with two trips to Kerala and one to Chennai scheduled for December). I just sent the SMS to the number on the website this morning.

- Will I get it installed and activated before my trip on Wednesday 7/12?
- Do I need a separate tag for each of my vehicles, or are these tags "portable"?

It's very unlikely you will get it and activated before Wednesday, rather you can directly go to their office and collect it from there instantly.

You need separate tag for each Vehicle.

Thanks

You may get it by 7th of December, its a gamble but most likely you will.

Also, why don't you visit ICICI, Bommanahalli Branch with the following set of documents and fill up the form?
  • Bank Cheque of 500 for the initial payment - Processing, Tag and 100 balance
  • Passport Size Photo
  • Address Proof
  • ID Proof
  • Registration Certificate (RC) copy

A friend went there yesterday at 1600 and he was out in under 10 minutes after submitting all of the above and he was told that the Tag will be fixed and enabled in "7 Working Days".

A person would visit your address and install the RFID/Tag on your windscreen.

Not Portable, you will have to have separate tags for each of your vehicles.

I also learnt that these tags are sold at few Point of Sale locations (Toll Plazas) and that they accept cash (ICICI bank accepts Cheque only) but again when I called one of the booths near Hassan, a lady received the call and eventually it was a wrong number mentioned on the NHAI site .
