Isn't it's replacement already being planned?
I was thinking the same. On one hand, they say they will remove toll barriers and collect tolls through some automated system (which will replace the current FASTag system). On the other hand, they say you can pay annual tolls through FASTag.

The government needs to collect money from road users. It was simple requirement, but it has become complicated over time with new additions.

This sounds great on paper. Same as BH registrations for hassle-free nationwide movement sounded like a swell idea, on paper.

We know how that one went.

Any idea what does this 60 min and 10 min window means? And for what?

Thanks.

Anyone else who finds this confusing?

In a situation when someone realizes upon reaching a toll plaza that they are low on balance since more than 60 mins, what should be done??

What I understand is that one should pass the toll plaza and then recharge within 10mins?? This seems idiotic and makes no sense. How will toll plaza allow this car to pass without toll deduction? I am sure I have misunderstood.

Or should one park the car by the roadside, recharge FasTag and wait for one hour (60min) before attempting to pass the toll plaza (paying double toll is better in this case)?

Edit: The language in this Hindu article is clear.

Quote:
“Transactions that are presented shall be validated based on reader read time and the time at which the tag is placed under hotlist / low balance / blacklist. Transactions presented on tags which are not active for more than 60 minutes prior to reader read time and up to 10 minutes after reader read time shall be declined with reason code 176,” noted the circular sent out by the NPCI.
Interpretation:

When arriving at a toll plaza, a user has to make sure that the FasTag was not blacklisted in the last 60mins.

After crossing a toll plaza, make sure FasTag does not get blacklisted within the next 10mins.

To ensure this, make sure that the balance has been more than the toll to be deducted on your journey and at no point it gets blacklisted. If it does, make sure to recharge ASAP after crossing a toll so that the 60mins and 10min windows are not breached.

If a car with blacklisted toll enters a toll plaza: pay double and make peace with it. Else recharge the FasTag and keep the car parked by the roadside for 60mins (not worth the hassle).

Is KVV mandatory now? I wanted to recharge and went to IDFC First app and it says KVV needs to be done to avoid deactivation of fastag.

Do you mean KYV? I received message few months ago from my bank to do re-KYV of the tag to avoid de-activation. I had to submit vehicle images and RC copy by visiting branch as per their guidelines to comply. You can check with your bank if that's what is expected.

Yes, KYV. Sorry for the typo.

You are correct, in the app itself they are asking to upload RC, vehicle pics from multiple angles and fastag pic. Just wanted to know whether it is a mandatory thing or something the banks force but really is optional. I guess I will submit them.

I think its to avoid fraudulant activities with the fast tag. It is better to complete the KyV steps to avoid blacklisting or deactivation and knowing about it at the toll.

Now days govt/RBI is very strict with compliance and I didn't want to find out the wrong way so I complied. Banks have to do what they need to do. Only flip side was that my tag was issued by Karur Vysya Bank (dealer's choice ) which did not have any online option. Thankfully they didn't make me go to a specific branch and I could do it at a nearby branch. Their staff made me take multiple pics from various angles. But they struggled to upload in their system due to technical glitch. I had to spend an hour there before they could figure out and complete the process.

Yup, I plan to do the same. Have a lot of highway travel coming up so don't want to be stuck on toll plazas on technicalities.

Luckily, IDFC first has a decent app so I don't think a bank visit is necessary. Even I don't want to find out about this in a toll plaza which will be really inconvenient so will do the KYV today.
