Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Proper implementation is key to the success of Fastag. Govt. announces so many good schemes but but it's the implementing agency's attitude which decides scheme's failure or success. In case of implementing Fastag the concessaioner's lacklustre response is the major problem from day one. The concessaioner didn't take Fastag seriously for reasons that we all know. Me myself replaced three tags but none of them got automatically detected. I don't understand what's the reason behind it? Still experimenting after 2.5 years of using it.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Some tolls seem to have gotten a new type of manual scanner which can scan the fastag from a distance. This is different from the earlier type where the scanner had to be nearly pressed to the tag on the windscreen.
Although it beats the point of a fully automated lane this is one of the better fastag experiences I have had. No need to move slowly step-by-step waiting for the tag to detect and hoping you are not forced to reverse since the vehicle behind is tailgating you. I saw this in a few tolls on the Krishnagiri-Coimbatore stretch.

This is very much possible at certain tolls and I guess the only way now is to dispute the transaction with your Fastag provider. Earlier, it was common at some of the L&T operated tolls (luckily never happened with my tag though during that period) and was subsequently fixed. I guess if one isn't alert and informed, one can easily lose money on account of such erroneous transactions.

Also, some of the tolls on NH 66 are a bit shady since there are 3 tolls in a stretch of 80-90 km and some not even appearing on the NHAI toll website. Another thread has more details on these.

Is the Fastag going to be valid on the Mumbai - Worli sea link too or should I keep my sea link tag too ? If i stick them next to each other will they cause confusion to the reader ?

The Fastag is not valid on the BWSL. You have to use ETC tag provided by MEP who have the responsibility to collect the toll. Both the ETC tag and Fastag work flawlessly without interfering each other. My friend's car has both the tag installed and working fine.

Read in the newspaper that MSRDC is working on migration to Fastag system and set themselves 1st January 2020 as deadline with one dedicated Fastag lane. In the coming days thereof all lanes except one or two will be Fastag enabled.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Yesterday my car crossed through Bangalore Airport toll booth (both ways). On both occasions, the booth operator just looked at the windshield to see if there is a tag or not and waved me by after checking something in the computer screen. It's hard to tell if there was any physical scanner outside or not. So far no deductions have happened. I just logged in to HDFC Bank's FASTag portal to confirm.

While at it, i also noticed that a deduction for a previous travel wasn't done either. I had traveled back from Mangalore couple of months back, and the last deduction was for Rs 45 at Nelamangala booth on NH 75. Next deduction which was supposed to happen on Tumkur Road hasn't happened.

I think, at some of the booths, they are just tracking the vehicle number and later deducting the amount? Is that a possibility? If that's the case, my car's tag is registered with VIN and not actual registration number, so obviously they wouldn't be able to charge the actual tag. Anybody else with similar observation?

I have been using fastag from last 2 years. This has happened to me many times. The first time I tested my fastag in Airport toll road, I was charged same for both onward and return journey, raised a dispute and difference amount was returned. Later there has not been any problems. I was not charged for return journey 2 or 3 times.
I keep travelling in NH75 quite a bit - about 2 times a month and I have been waived on to proceed by toll operator many a times on not detecting the tag. In fact till last 2-3 months before one or the other toll out of those 5, missed to deduct toll in every journey . As per my transaction details, only from last 2 months tolls are regularly and correctly debited from my wallet.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

We have a FastTag from Paytm as well as HDFC Bank. In my opinion the Paytm FastTag is the easiest to recharge via the app. With the HDFC Bank FastTag you need to log in to their dedicated site and then recharge, the interface of that site is absolutely trash. HDFC hasn't managed to address the one crucial aspect of using FastTag ie. the recharge in a proper way.

Still no UPI recharge option for HDFC fastag? So many banks have it that one seldom needs to login and recharge. I don't remember when I logged in last to my ICICI fastag account for this ever since UPI recharge became operational. Takes less than 15 seconds to recharge through any UPI app.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I just ordered a fastag for the brio via paytm.I reside near a toll plaza and could use the special pass. With fastag being made mandatory ,would I still be eligible to pass the toll without money being deducted from my paytm account or no such exemptions?

I'll soon update here my fastag experience on Mumbai-Nasik expressway till Dhule passing through 3 toll plazas with entry-exit scheme. All these toll plazas are mentioned as active on icici list. But I've seen lots chaos here on fastag lane in my frequent regular trips.

What I'm really wondering is how my pass through 2 interconnecting plazas will work out. Will it be same as cash reciepts scanning at exit and pass or double charged on exit plazas.
This is how was my experience from Mumbai to Dhule on Saturday 30 November.

On the first toll plaza (Ghoti toll), it was all chaos all over. All lanes had placards mentioning Fastag only No cash. All vehicles were stuck up in all lanes. There were no dedicated staff to identify fastag vehicles. It took more than normal time to pass through this toll plaza. One handheld scanner was used for 2 lanes by passing it on. It was very frustrating to be qued up in cash paying vehicles lane even after having fastag.

From here onwards on all tolls, dedicated fastage lane was displays before reaching toll plaza. There were dedicated staff at all 3 toll plazas (Baswant, Chandwad & Laling toll plaza) who were escorting fastage vehicles to proper lane.

All other vehicles were not allowed to enter in fastag lanes. But they were asking all fastag vehicles owners if fastag has enough balance or not. All these plazas automatically scanned icici fastag flawlessly. No handheld scanners required.

Overall good experience with icici fastag. Amounts were deducted correctly and NO double charging at exit. SMS followed up within 15 minutes about amount debited

Return journey to Mumbai is scheduled on coming Tuesday. I'll update about it too soon.

I think I have seen this kind of handheld scanner at the nelamangala toll booth as well (when entering from Tumkur) - just scan from where he is standing & let you pass through, infact much quicker than the roof mounted scanner where they ask you to move fwd/backward and wait. Its quick & easy and like you said, no circus of trying to come close to the windshield to scan & ask the operator if its detected etc.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I am FASTag user from 2016 and pretty happy with that. Some of the issues that I faced

1) People getting into FASTag lanes without a valid tag and arguing with staff
2) The SMS for deduction is not prompt and sometimes it would not arrive at all. So far the deductions all seems to be fine

In my opinion the key issue for people to use this would be the difficulty to recharge the tag. It should have been possible to recharge it at some petrol pumps or even at the toll gate itself. I don't understand why such a simple mechanism is not worked out. Is that already available and I am not aware of it?

@n_ramesh99; I really do not see why we cannot have a common platform for the recharge. I remember when credit cards first came it, the establishment had to be enrolled with the card issues. Now it is open country.
