Bengaluru: Real-time traffic display (Variable Messaging System) introduced

Bengaluru Traffic Police has introduced a live traffic update system, called VMS (Variable Messaging System) through a display board set up at Hebbal Junction, towards Kempegowda International Airport.

This is a pilot project initiated in association with 3M, and if positive feedback is received, more display signs will be bought and installed at 40 different locations around Bengaluru, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R Hithendra.

This cloud-based next-gen technology provides real-time information to commuters on journey time and distances, traffic congestion, alternative routes, weather conditions and emergency information which includes possible parking spots available, through road side sensors.

Not convinced about its utility. An android app that gives important notifications would have been more cost-effective and useful than physical display signs at multiple locations.

You mean like Google Maps ? There is a setting that enables it to give you notifications of bad traffic on your usual routes.

Well, Google Maps does not give you "Good Morning, Bangalore. Drive Safely'' type of notifications - but these boards do that (as can be seen from the images above)

The utility of app-based notifications (and to a much lesser extent, these physical boards) would be real-time information dissemination regarding jams or delays due to an accident or a bus breakdown (happens frequently in Bangalore, for some reason). Other examples of real-time useful info:

- Flooding under Sirsi Circle flyover. Take alternative routes
- VIP movement between Residency Road & Vidhana Soudha between 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM. Take alternative routes.

Notifications like above based on an user's geo-location would be more efficient than placing these expensive (I would assume) physical boards at various locations.

Contrary to your belief, I think its an useful initiative. Using an app while driving would be more dangerous than say just looking up and seeing this signage. And if you see the post than its mentioned that VMS would be used to broadcast messages like : diversions, road blocks and accidents. Infact I have seen one such board being used on BETL which did used to broadcast such incidents. Not sure if its still there though.
