re: Fuel stations in 8 states to be shut on Sundays. EDIT: Cancelled

This is just a pressure tactic and the PM's appeal is cleverly being (mis)represented as the reason for the shut down.

The petrol pump dealers, irrespective of their affiliation, are pressing mainly for two things:

1. Increase in commissions.

2. Rationalised allocation of new bunks.

The first demand has been adequately covered in many of the articles quoted above. The second has been mentioned in yesterday's The Hindu. Let me quote:

Quote:
The main demand of the CIPD is a single-window system to avoid the mushrooming of fuel bunks in close proximity, which dealers blame on arbitrary allotment of outlets. “The current system does not consider feasibility while allotting outlets. As a result, we have bunks coming up even next to each other, which is a lose-lose situation for both owners. We want allotment to be decided in a scientific manner,” a CIPD member said.

The actual reason for the Sunday shutdown threat is for hiking dealer commission. You can find the details here -

There were few discussions on this in the past Link
Well lot of contradictory story on this. But even the regional news channel had mentioned that sundays would be off in support of Modi's vision. I am not sure which one to believe though.

But true or not, this if really implemented is going to be a stupid decision and one that would create confusion and chaos!

Foolish short sighted fellows. All they need to do, is to organise shifts and work through the week.

Anyway the pump owners inherent greed and avarice will never allow them to stay closed a moment longer than necessary!

Beginning May 14, fuel stations in 8 states to be shut on Sundays
Quote:
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive to conserve oil, the consortium of Indian petroleum dealers declared on Tuesday that fuel outlets across eight states will be closed every Sunday, beginning on May 14. The decision is expected to affect at least 20,000 fuel pumps in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana, Suresh Kumar, an executive committee member of the consortium, confirmed to PTI.

Nice move, letting the PM be the fall guy. I guess it shows the dealers themselves know they are skating on thin ice and wants a bulwark.

By the way, does fuel come under the purview of ESMA?

Fuel pumps in 8 states to remain closed on Sundays from May 14!!!

Beginning May 14, fuel outlets in eight states across the nation will remain shut every Sunday. This is being done on a call given by the Prime Minister to conserve oil. The consortium of Indian petroleum dealers says that this has been planned a few years back but the oil marketing companies had then requested the consortium to reconsider the decision in lieu of the inconvenience to general public.

With the implementation of this decision around 20,000 fuel outlets in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra & Haryana would remain shut for 24 hours on Sundays, starting May 14.

There's going to be a good demand for Jerry cans now.. those who venture out on long drives would need this in their trunk as an essential.

Re: Fuel pumps in 8 states to remain closed on Sundays from May 14!!!

This decision of the government seems to have been taken in haste by overlooking the inconvenience and problems it will cause to the masses. There are number of other ways to conserve oil rather than ridiculously shutting down the supply. Moreover fuel is a precious commodity and considering its high price, hardly anyone can afford to waste it.

Foreseeing the after effects of this
1. Melas and Queues will start to appear in Fuel Stations right from Saturday evening 5 PM and Monday morning
2. Less Autos/Taxis/Lorries/Private Buses ply going forward on Sundays, even if available, will demand more fare on Sundays
3. Few Petrol bunks may still open and demand more money (This will start after few weeks/months.)
4. Then, Supreme court will pass an ORDER accordingly since no body follows the rules
5. There may be police checks in petrol stations post the supreme court order
6. Few police may earn some unofficial revenues from petrol stations
7. There may be discussions on Social media, internet sites on which stations are open on Sundays and which are closed

And Saga continues !!

This is total bull crap! A whole lot of people travel inter city & states during weekends and they all are going to face severe problems. I have no idea how does this lead to fuel conservation. Going by this step, they might as well put a restriction for 6 months not to sell any vehicles, impound vehicles which run more than certain kms in a year etc etc!!

I can't understand why people think about such dumb side of any statements made!

Edit:: I wonder what'll happen with the inter city private bus services between these states! A trip from Kerala to Bangalore needs a definite refill somewhere in the middle of TN. The only people who dare take such trips are the high FE hatchback owners I guess, who can do a 600 km trip without a re-fill.

Government has no hand in this. This is a decision taken by association of petroleum dealers and is probably related to demand for higher commission.

Also, there is an existing thread:

One more industry that's going to be hit badly would be the self drive car rentals who get their major revenue by lending the cars on weekends. This is going to cost them more if the above gets implemented.

As a recreational biker and weekend rider, I'm really worried and furious about this. If it gets implemented it'll be the end of my sunday rides. Even filling up on saturdays isn't an option since my D390 only does 220-240 for a tank full. I hope sense prevails and they take back this absurd decision

re: Fuel stations in 8 states to be shut on Sundays. EDIT: Cancelled

This is simply outrageous! A simple solution is to have self-service fuel stations!

What will people how travel extensively travel over the weekend do? Also, will all the Oil Companies fall under this plan OR Reliance gets to keep their bunks open?

Absolutely the government had no hand in this but after succumbing to the pressures of the petroleum dealers, this arrangement seems to be the only solution the government has, wherein the PM himself has called upon to implement this scheme.

That is a rather bizarre way to look at the issue .

Akin to: The PM talks about problems with overpopulation. I take out a gun and go shoot everyone who has crossed my path and then say "the PM has endorsed this."

I have not seen a news report wherein the government or the PM has given a call or endorsed the move by the dealers to close their pumps on Sundays. Even your quoted report states nothing of that sort.
