Cool safety initiative in France - Billboard gives pedestrians a scare if they cross on a redlight-crash.jpg
The translation of text in the picture is:
Don't Risk Looking Death In The Face (Respect Traffic Lights Before Crossing The Road)

Just as public road is shared by all types of road users, Road safety is also a shared responsibility.
In our surroundings, even in this age of informational abundance, lack of awareness is the main culprit or roadblock in making our roads safe.
Be it lack of knowledge of road rules, civic sense, social empathy, or rather lack of common sense.

When there are extreme measures being proposed, it is indeed praiseworthy the way organisations and governments work towards spreading awareness.

This is one such nice initiative which the French government is working on spreading out, the crash billboard.
As its tagline says, "Creating an impact, without an actual impact"

Using a motion detector and hidden speakers, every time a pedestrian crosses the street on red, the sound of abruptly braked screeching tires is played. And a camera captures the "Staring at death" picture of the person and displays on the billboard for them to see.

Maybe if I was faster and braked harder, then I would have a picture of a very scared girl captured at the 18 second mark.

Fantastic campaign. They want to bring down the 4500 deaths or injuries a year.
India loses 3 people every 10 mins.
