Re: Car wheel theft in India

Seems like the robbers became rampant again after staying dormant for a while.

Re: Car wheel theft in India

Hello.
After seeing that Creta, Seltos, Venue etc are becoming targets for their alloys, I was having sleepless nights as my Hyundai Venue SX-OPTIONAL is parked on road at night time. The SX optional has 16 inch alloys with 215/60/16 size tires. Just made a small calculation. A genuine alloy costs roughly 7500 and the tire costs roughly 9500 depending upon brand of tire used. It makes 17000 for a single tire and 68000 for entire car.
I had been looking for lockable lugnuts which should give some protection rather than any tom dick or Harry coming with the spanner and making me poorer by 70 odd thousand rupees. The usual options which Google gave were from Gorrila and other imported brands. While app surfing Amazon I got hold of RTL lockable nuts. The product shows compatibility with all vehicles with thread size M12x1.5.

Amazon details

A little bit of Googling told me Venue thread size and yesterday only got them delivered.

The details of lugnut set.
The nuts are delivered in set of four with two keys. The groove on which the lugnut key fits is deep and should be able to take the abuse with time.

1. The best thing is the quality. These are not like the usual cheap feather light nuts you usually get from alloy wheel stores. They have a nice weight and while holding it does gives a positive vibe. It's made of stainless steel & nikel alloy hence should take care of the commonest problem in aftermarket nuts, " Rusting".
2. I was wary since the nuts do carry a high price but once you receive the set, you'll yourself realise it worth every paisa. The alloys and tires don't come cheap. I drive a Hyundai Venue with tire size 215/60/16. A genuine alloy costs 7500 and a tire costs 9500. Net total 17000 for one tire. For complete car it comes to 68000. For protection of such high value article, the nut price is nothing.
3. The key given is a perfect fit in the nut removing handle given by Hyundai. So no tension of buying a seperate handle.
4. It does looks a bit odd when one nut stands out of others. But when car is in motion, the odd one out blends well with the tire. And for tire and alloy safety, you have to accept this little nut.
5. Before buying, only make sure that you know the thread specifications of your car. It should not be difficult to get information of thread size from you car service station not you can even google it.

The fitment

The key inserted in original Hyundai provided spanner

Though the details says nuts are made of stainless steel & nikle, and are rustproof. Fingers crossed for the longevity claim.

Oh God, this all so brazen. Is this Dilli? Mentioning the State/place will be informative (in all posts), actually. I use lock nuts in my car and it's proved to be very useful, with its signature key

How is it holding up? I'm planning on ordering this as there was a theft last night, Alcazar's wheels replaced by bricks just one cross road away.

The lugnuts have held up well. Though they are not 100% rust proof as claimed .There is a small rusty spot at couple of places where the nut paint had been slightly ripped off due to tire changes. Other than that, there has been no issue at all.

I am ignorant and I have a question; Is the key unique or can these Brick & Paving Block Thugs buy the same key/lock set off Amazon?

Thanks!
Kia also sells them as accessory for Rs1999, got them installed yesterday, was told that keys/lugs are unique for every pack.
I would definitely suggest anyone to bargain and get it for free while buying new/before delivery. Quality and build looks good for now, lets see if this will hold up any better.
