Drunk Chennai man leaves behind his Audi, drives off with Omni ambulance

https://www.indiatimes.com/news/indi...al-335878.html

He apparently dropped an injured friend off at a hospital late at night and then was so high, he drove off in the hospital’s Omni ambulance.

At around 3 AM that night his driver returned the Omni and took back the Audi, by which time the cops had been called to investigate the ambulance’s theft.

re: Drunk Chennai man leaves behind his Audi, drives off with Omni ambulance

Read this news few minutes back on my FB feed.
I cannot imagine how drunk this person might have been to be unable to differentiate between an audi and an omni.
Good thing is no one got hurt and all's well that ends well.

Amazing no one was injured, including himself.
Lucky he drove home "to his own home".

I don't find this funny, my blood boils when ever I see drunk people doing things which no sane person would do.

I just hope, hospital sues him for theft & police books him for drunk driving & theft.

This is unacceptable. It's apalling how this incident has been reported as bizarre (read as funny) rather then as an offence. I don't see any mention of drunk and drive case registered against the individual, hopefully that has been done and he is penalised for what he has done. This could have been much worse

1. He could have met with an accident, a fatal one or
2. That ambulance could have been in need for some emergency

Luckily, based on what is reported, nothing of that sort has happened I would assume. This is reckless and acts such as this kills even basic road manners

If he can afford an Audi it is likely that he can afford to pay to hush the matter up.

Notice how he hasn’t even been named in the article.

This article says the hospital did not lodge a police complaint because they were not sure if he was drunk.

Perhaps he had too many DSG and other service issues with his Audi, and hence decided to pick up something more reliable?

Am I the only one who thought that the man was trying to play GTA in real life?

P.S - How did he even manage to get the keys of the ambulance?

Before we get our BP high or start deciding how harsh should be the punishment, tell me why weren't the keys to ambulance secured? They were probably lying in the keyhole itself and that's an open invitation any ways.

Rest coming to the incident -

Ambulances have to be taken out at a moment's notice so the keys are generally kept in the vehicle and it is parked under the eyes of a watchman.

The police are perfectly capable of performing a breathanalyzer test and arresting / fining drunk drivers, they do that all the time, just watch any busy road on weekend nights. Nobody has to lodge a FIR to report drunken driving.

I guess a certain amount of money buys quite a lot of sudden unsureness about the man's drunken state in hospital officials and cops.

re: Drunk Chennai man leaves behind his Audi, drives off with Omni ambulance

Audi vs Omni totally different piece of cake. Major changes which can't be ignored or unnoticed are at vs mt, driving position, ergonomics, electronics and the list is never ending. By the time he entered inside the cabin he would be knowing he is not in correct place. It was not a joyful ferry ride which made him forgot what he is into.

There must be another side of the story but that will remain untold until someone finds that guy.

This seems too bizarre to be true. A drunk person entering the wrong car is possible. How did he start it? His muscle memory would obviously search for the keyhole (or button) in the Audi, slot it in D and drive off. Or was he in another level of drunk?

The news from the below site says he was drunk but did chose to drive away in an ambulance as he did not get cabs at that point of time:

http://www.thenewsminute.com/article...eturn-it-73311

Apparently he had left behind his car for his friend to return home when she was discharged (though how could she drive with a leg injury as stated in the article, no idea).

Pathetic!!

Reminds me of the drunk Kerala man who drove off in a bus because of a similar reason - that the last bus to his town had already left.

re: Drunk Chennai man leaves behind his Audi, drives off with Omni ambulance

It seems from the article that the AUDI guy was not booked for drunken driving or even theft. Just because the incident is funny & he drives an AUDI he shouldn't be let off so easily. AFAIK drunk people are not allowed inside the hospital premises, the hospital staff should have been more careful.

On a lighter note, this guy must have some driving skills, changing from an AUDI to an OMNI is not easy that too in a drunk state. I personally kind of take about 1-2 km to properly adjust to the OMNI after driving our Ecosport. How he could not recognize the difference between an OMNI & an AUDI is also bizarre, maybe after seeing the organ type accelerator pedal in the OMNI he mistook it for an AUDI.
