Trivandrum to install EMServ - System that allows Ambulances to 'free flow' through traffic lights Trivandrum city traffic successfully completed trial of the EmSerV(Emergency Service Vehicle Priority System) system and is all set for its implementation in the City.
(EmSerV) is developed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
The system can identify arrival of an emergency vehicle and provide green signal for the vehicle, allowing it to pass through the junction without any interruption. The EmSerV has been functioning on a test mode at Kumarapuram Junction at Trivandrum for the past two months, since December 15, 2017.
The facility was operated with the support of Keltron and an ambulance provided by a private hospital from the city.
The C-DAC team has presented the system to officials of police department and Kerala road safety authority. IG Manoj Abraham has told C-DAC that the system could be implemented in the city with the support of ambulance service of Indian Medical Association. Mode of operation;- EmSerV has a controller unit installed inside the traffic signal controller and a vehicle mount unit(VMU)
- During an emergency trip, the VMU will broadcast signals.
- Once the EmSeV controller receives the signals, it will identify direction and location of the vehicle.
- It will then give command to the traffic signal controller to ensure priority green signal for the approaching emergency service vehicle.
- A hooter installed at the traffic junction will generate audio alarm to alert drivers, pedestrians and the police officers at the junction about the arrival of the ambulance.
- The traffic signal system will then terminate the currently running signal phase and opens right-of-way for the ambulance.
- The signal sequence is resumed once the emergency vehicle clears the junction.
