@ Tifosi - Reasons are clear.

1. Overloading in the innova (The mangled vehicle resembled an innova)
2. Blind overtaking of the Bus.. hitting the barricade and onto the
oncoming lorry.

This looks more like error on the Drivers (Van) part than the others involved. But tragedy is that the driver escaped. (Both the drivers Lorry - car escaped)

The authorities have sanctioned a budget of 5 lacs to study the safety on ECR.

Thats real bad news @tifosi .

People, I have driven this on road a couple of times and trust me these barricades placed on the road is a killer by itself.Leave alone the driving style of the bus drivers driving between Pondy and Chennai.
There are no sign boards indicating a barricade installed on the road. If am not wrong Kovalam is the place near Fisherman's Cove rite?

If the stretch us causing so many accidents and no one has acted upon it so far, what should the authorities be called, a bunch of inhuman insensitive jokers !!

Sounds pretty harsh, but this kind of news is no good either.

When he noticed the lorry coming in the opposite direction, he swerved to the right
I guess he panicked - he basically swerved into the path of the oncoming lorry after seeing it. Sad incident.

Read about this news this morning in newspapers. Really horrific. The vechicle seems to be a tavera. Whatever it is it has been overloaded. 15 people in one MPV is too much.

In general the ECR is a very dangerous road. It does not have a median first of all. And police contributes to the killing by erecting new checkposts here and there. The zig zag check posts suddenly surprises the vechicles. Also the vehicles speed a lot on this stretch and make dangerous overtaking manouvers.

The road as such doesnt have a median and has many bad curves that cant take speeds more than 50-60 kmph.

As pondicherry is famous for liquor in cheaper prices many drunken driving incidents are also there. Many guys want to quickly go to pondicherry have fun and come back on the same day.

I have heard incidents where some rocks were placed on the middle of the road by robbers in the middle of the night. When the surprised drivers stop to see what it is or if they get hit and get down from the car, the robbers have a lucky time with their preys.

Tragic. It is better to avoid this road really.

From the pic, it was a silver Chevrolet Tavera with TN-65 Ramnad-registered taxi plates.
Ramnad is a sweet sleepy town, roughly 40 km west of President Dr. Abdul Kalam's Rameshwaram.

The roof has crumpled against the direction of the stiffener ribbing. Must have been a fairly high energy crash.

What price driver impatience? Overtaking from the wrong-side of the road on a two lane undivided highway. And instant death and bereavement for innocents, while the perpetrator goes on to drive again.

the road is too narrow. actually, even the bus driver is at fault for parking the bus in the way of the traffic. he should park it off the road as much as he can. but, there is no forgiving the driver of this MPV, he should be made to pay for this rash act. to think that the family was returning home after sending off their son/nephew to South Korea. imagine the boy's surprise when he calls home to tell them that he has reached safely.
