That was exactly my thought after getting on the road of Moore plains from Tso Kar.

Some extract from my May-2018 Ladakh travelogue.

We got on the amazing road of Moore plains. I got the XUV in sixth gear and started cruising it at 120kmph.

Although it's a wonderful strainght road after the ghat section of Pang, it's no way 25kms. The distance from Pang to Meroo is 33km and it's an S. There is no straight piece of even 5kms there in that stretch.

Below is the map and also a picture when I drove there.

And my experience dates back to 2012 and again in 2013. Quite fast and straight for really longer distance but loads of Sand trucks probably because we were crossing the city of joy around midnight.

re: The straightest roads in India

The Coimbatore bypass is quite straight. During a clear day you can see quite some distance.

re: The straightest roads in India

Apart from the road to dhanushkodi, there are straight stretches on the krishnagiri - Dharmapuri sector & also on the coimbatore - chengapally stretch. The picture is somewhere between Davangere & Mumbai. EDIT: the L&T bypass shown above might well be one of the poorest surfaces for a tolled road. They charge 45 bucks for 28KM

Re: The straightest roads in India

Sriganganagar to Suratgarh in Rajasthan is one of the longest straight roads i have seen, while travelling to Bikaner from Punjab. One more thing is that, it appears to be exactly in line with the north south direction. It is a two lane dividerless road, though the traffic has increased nowadays, it used to be a quite sleepy road, around 10-12 yrs back. Also posting a 12 year old picture of my cute little pocket rocket, the mpfi zen somewhere along the same highway, but may be on the way between Suratgarh and Bikaner. I really loved that car, on such highways.

Re: The straightest roads in India

Jaipur - Ajmer route has one stretch near Dudu which is arrow straight for several kms and is excessively prone to accidents.

Re: The straightest roads in India

In the Jhansi - Kanpur NH (part of East-West corridor), there is a scale straight stretch before we reach Orai bypass from Jhansi side.

Lalitpur - Sagar has very straight sections but not so much on the Sagar - Lakhnadon section. Around Seoni again, there are straight sections.

Near the airstrip on the Agra - Lucknow E-Way, you have a great straight but that is not more than 10 Kms.

The Yamuna Expressway, of course, has many sections.

Re: The straightest roads in India

Yamuna Expressway is a solid stretch of straight tarmac, almost in its entire length!

Also, I remember from my yesteryear holidays in Rajasthan, the route from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer was also very straight and virtually traffic free. That was the first experience I had of enjoyable high speed driving in India before we were blessed with the Yamuna Expressway!

The road stretch between ettayapuram and Tuticorin on Madurai to Tuticorin highway has a good 40km straight stretch except for a slight bend at the middle.

Re: The straightest roads in India

I think the OP should have probably mentioned 'straight by Indian standards', LOL.

Some such stretches on which I have driven are

1. L&T byepass between Coimbatore & Walayar
2. Somewhere in the Belgaum - Chitradurga stretch
3. NICE road, Bangalore
4. Guess there is one or two in the Karwar stretch to Goa too, can't recollect.

We, as a family, drove the in the L&T byepass for the first time in 2000 when the road was in pristine condition & low traffic. Our M 800 was driven @ 120 with 4 people on board and hit a max 120 or so on speedo and driven by my sister.

Since many days I've one such road in my Bucket list which is the NH62 between SriGanganagar and Suratgarh in Rajasthan.
It is a 60Km straight road and the longest in our country I guess. Obviously since it is a Desert it's possible to build such a straight road.

I has this same road on my mind. It isn't a desert. You will be amazed to see Orange (Kinow) and Palm orchards lining both sides of the road. Went on this stretch back in Feb this year when I went to visit my brother who was posted at Suratgarh.

Re: The straightest roads in India

This is a very informative thread.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken but I read somewhere that these straight, flat and long roads are apparently where using cruise control adds to fuel efficiency numbers the most. Occasional hilly parts of the highways i.e, up slopes and down slopes tend to disrupt that consistency of maintaining that cruise control constant speed, which in turn affects F.E. Although I do not know whether the difference is significant.
