Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

Stopped at the lights when I saw a guy who had somehow placed a tablet perfectly in place of the speedometer & was watching "Two & a Half Men"
And no, he did not stop the video once on the move.

Auto drivers operating the wiper with their left hand using a lever attached to it inside.

Abusing the rear view mirror - seting it up as a 'conversation' mirror to speak to the occupants. Not to forget - when this comes with an integrated display, using it to play movies while driving.

Not sure what lesson he will learn after passing away?

But a good example of what can go wrong.

If I got a bird dropping or something in the middle of my windshield while in traffic, I would use it then and there for mine and other's safety.
Also, properly directed washer nozzles, hardly spill water at urban speeds.
While I do agree it could be used as and when required, bird droppings don't dry up in a couple of minutes while one can use it without hindrance. While the nozzle may be spraying correctly, the wipers do splash outside the windscreen.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

I have seen a lot of things that I think are weird/Dangerous -

I think most of us would have seen them in India.

1. People holding their phones to their ears with the help of their shoulders
2. Driving really slow and causing a small traffic pile up while surfing on their phones
3. Spitting paan, guthka and what not by opening the door.
4. Opening the rear boot hatch and allowing kids to sit there, then driving really slow so they don't fall down.
5. Having kids standup and get their heads out of the sunroof and drive for a joyride.
6. Drying handkerchief outside the car by sticking it in the closed window.
7. Bikers taking selfies while riding

&

8. Having sun blinds block the driving window completely and then cutting lanes with gay abandon. You cannot even give them a look for being rash. I feel it is part of a defense mechanism rather than sun protection where they get away with irresponsible driving by hiding their face.

This one irritates me the most.

What an irony would it be if they were praying for an accident free journey but this act ended up as the very reason for an accident

Of course YES, this is just a common sense that one should have, not to spill water on riders. if at all there's a need to clean the windscreen they can stop/park the car along the roadside and wipe it instead of spilling on the other fellow innocent riders.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

Turning on the Hazard lamps as soon as it starts to rain. IMHO it is also a weird thing to do while driving because barring some recent cars, on turning on the hazard lamps the turn indicators do not work as intended. So these cars are even more hazardous than the prevailing weather condition(rain) itself.

I think it would suffice if we turn on the headlamps & may be the fog lights as well during such overcast conditions.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

I have seen people using their hazard lights when they want to go straight at a cross road. The intention is clear since they shut it off after they have passed the cross road.

I have also had a person using his wipers to signal to those coming in the opposite direction on a narrow bridge near Munnar. On questioning why he did that, the response was, "he flashed his lights, I did too, but he kept coming, so I used to wipers to let him know that he shouldn't come any further (similar to waving ones hands)".

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

I think I can add to this.

I frequent the Mumbai - Pune route and usually hire private or cab aggregators.

One common trait I've seen is that the drivers speed up to 120, coast the car in neutral till it reaches well below 80, and accelerate back to 120 and repeat the activity!

Fuel saving myths are getting out of hand these days. Plus this would consume a lot more fuel than actually maintaining a constant speed.

I wanted to speak to these guys about this but I used better judgement after the first time.

My bad. Another media channel had reported till he was admitted to the hospital. Guess they didn't follow through. Took the snippet from a different website.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

Was behind a bike yesterday, on my bike. Both the rider and pillion were busy on their phones, on call with one hand on the phone. Slowed down and asked them if they were on call with each other, got a good laugh, hope they got the point though.

I have once seen a Motor Training school instructor drive the car from the passenger seat ! The driver seat was empty.

Guess he was feeling too lazy to switch seats.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

Not weird, but stupid.

1. I've seen an increasing trend of people sipping alcohol while driving, esp a beer or so.

2. Let's not even get started about kids popping out from the crore rupees cars. Lesser said the better.

Completely irresponsible bunch of idiots.

Re: Weird things you've seen people do while driving

I have noticed many of the things above. The craziest thing I have noticed is riding the car with a kid / baby on the driver's lap. Seen many times in small lanes but I saw such a guy the other day who was actually letting his baby (2/3 year old) stand on his lap to hold the steering wheel while he was holding the baby and driving on a very busy road. I was shell-shocked.
