Cops misuse seized SUV, owner remotely switches off engine & locks cops inside the car

Not sure what to make of this; but an interesting use of connected car tech if true

Quote:
The SUV belongs to Akhand Singh, a native of Gonda who now lives in the city's Gosainganj. Akhand was reportedly caught in a financial dispute on Tuesday between his friend and another youth who had taken a loan from the friend to buy a car. Since the youth had defaulted on loan instalment, Akhand's friend had taken possession of the car. The disgruntled youth lodged a loot case against Akhand and his friend, and also gave police the registration number of Akhand's SUV.

A police team intercepted Akhand and seized his SUV in Gomtinagar on Tuesday. He was asked to collect his SUV on Wednesday. However, when Akhand checked on his GPS-enabled SUV using his smartphone on Wednesday, he found it on the move and remotely turned off the ignition, leaving the cops locked inside, around 143km away in Lakhimpur Kheri. Akhand turned on the ignition following earnest requests from SHO Singh, but on the condition that he would release the central lock only after his SUV returned to Lucknow.

Prima facie the police had no business to intercept and seize his SUV. So a good lesson against high handedness.

re: Cops misuse seized SUV, owner remotely switches off engine & locks cops inside SUV

Even if the owner locked the vehicle remotely, what prevented the cops from unlocking manually or using the remote to unlock? For cars that allow locking from an app, does the alarm get activated if locking is done from the app and unlocking is done using the remote?

If the alarm is triggered in that case, there would be many cases where this might happen. Suppose you lock the car using the app, and get on a flight, or go to a place where you are unreachable by phone. If someone tries to open the car using the remote, they would be stuck in a tricky situation.

Another situation I can think of is that the app provides a separate option to lock the car in case of theft, which prevents all other attempts to unlock. If that were the case, that is a good to have feature.

Couldn't help laughing heartily. Serves the cops right. First taking possession without reason and then going off on joy rides. What the police indulged in is theft. Serves then right.

As per another news report, the vehicle in question is a Mahindra Scorpio. So probably there was some (brilliant) aftermarket security system at work.

All in all a fun incident that hopefully taught the cops a good lesson.

Lucknow Cops Take Seized SUV for ‘Joyride’; Owner Tracks Vehicle, Locks Them Inside

Quote:
Three Lucknow Police Personnel had a hard time on Wednesday as they were stranded around 143 kilometres away from the state capital in the Lakhimpur Kehri area after they took a seized vehicle on a ride. Using a tracking system, the car's owner stopped the SUV’s engine and locked it, leaving the cops stranded inside for two hours.

The personnel could be ‘rescued’ later, only after police officials requested the owner of the vehicle to unlock the security system through his mobile app.

Could they have not shattered the windows/windshield and escape through that ? Wouldn't such protection systems cause a problem if someone is genuinely trapped inside, after an accident or an electronic malfunction of the security system ?

Some high-end aftermarket car trackers offer this functionality. I believe today's "connected cars" like the Venue can also easily do this, but manufacturers probably refrain because of potential legal hassles.

This reminds me of an 8-year old thread where a Q7 owner caught the workshop misusing his SUV - link (Customer's Q7 being misused by Audi Dealership @ Vakola. Caught by GPS Tracker).

I remember a US TV show where cops leave vehicles in to lure the car lifters. Once stolen and the thieves are on the move, cops remotely switch off the engine and they become sitting ducks.

Serves the police men right . If police don’t follow the law, how they expect others to follow .

Read from the news that the owner has complained to SP, hope some strict action is taken against the erring policemen.

They would have followed the law - IF - they had known about the tracker

What a use of technology! This incident would have definitely horrified the cops and in future they will think twice before doing anything like this to a 'connected or not connected' car

Re: Cops misuse seized SUV, owner remotely switches off engine & locks cops inside the car

This made my day! Very funny, imagine the reaction from those cops who were inside the car. I am sure they didn't have any idea on that. My home town is very near Gonda so I know there are many like Akhand who can take cops for a ride.

Couldn’t help myself from laughing at the state of those poor law men. After all, they were wrong in every sense by taking that joyride.
I think fear of being caught stopped them from damaging the car to come out on being locked inside. For which they preferred to call up the owner, I am sure there must have been some requests to the owner to keep it under cover.
I hope the government doesn’t ban this feature now.

Anyways, a good catch dude(owner)!
