According to a media report, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has extended the validity of driving licenses, vehicle fitness certificates and all other types of permits till June 30, 2020. The decision was taken due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis and countrywide lockdown.



The report states that the extension is only valid if the expiry date of the documents is between February 1 to June 30, 2020.

Additionally, commercial vehicle operators can access the 'non-use clause facility' provided by VAHAN platform online for suspension of tax liability.

A good and soothing move, quite in tune with the times. It would have been in the fitness of things had insurance companies come up with a similar circular to extend all valid insurance policies for automobiles, that are valid till between February 1 to June 30, 2020. The insurance offices are not working normally during these pandemic months.

My license expires on 16 april. I was planning to go to RTO for renewal when lockdown happened. Was stressing about what to do now. This will ensure people like me can get it done without any worry.

Govt extends validity of vehicle documents till July 31

The ministry has earlier issued an advisory on March 30, 2020 to all regarding extension of validity of the documents related to Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced further extending the validity of motor vehicle documents till September 30, 2020.

All documents like fitness certificates, permit (all types), driving license, registration certificates that have expired on or any time after February 1, 2020, will remain valid until September 30.

Previously the deadline was until July 31, 2020.

Third party insurance is included but comprehensive insurance ain't, so you may need to provide late fees and vehicle subjected to inspection when the date expires.

They are working fine. I renewed my 4 wheeler's insurance online through Coverfox. Same Insurance company, same policy, just 25% cheaper through Coverfox than direct with the Insurer.

Mine expired in april. Local RTO still isn't open for public dealing and even if its open I don't plan to go soon. Moreover as stated below the document validity is extended till 30th September so there is ample time to go when covid cases go down a bit.

Mine will expire in July. For someone like me in his thirties; I don’t understand the concept of renewing a DL. I understand that after a certain age, it is fine but am I suspected to suddenly forget driving at this age?

MoRTH India has extended the validity of documents related to Fitness, Permit (all types), License, Registration etc till 31 March 2021 in view of the COVID-19 situation.

This covers all documents whose validity has expired since 1st Feb, 2020 or would expire by 31st March 2021. Enforcement authorities are advised to treat such documents valid till 31st of March 2021.

The Ministry had issued advisories on 30th March, 2020, 9th June, 2020 and 24th Aug 2020 regarding the extension of validity of documents related to Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

I wouldn't think so. Insurance is not a govt document though govt mandates to have it.

But I seriously thought that the extension covers the Pollution certificate. But it seems it doesn't because the traffic police continues to ask for the updated ones.

I believe it only includes the Fitness certificate/ RC renewal since these are under the ambit of the RTO. The vehicles that need renewal have to he physically inspected at the RTO for road worthiness. And since the RTO was closed during this period, they have extended the timeline.

on the other hand insurance is not under the RTO/governing authorities and can be done online (except where it has expired and vehicle needs inspection). PUC centers too have always remained open at petrol pumps during lockdown. Hence no extension or justification can be provided for their expiry.

FC renewals have already commenced. I had applied for it in November for my Yamaha RX100 and have been given a date of 30-Dec for inspection.
