Re: Mumbai Trans Harbour Link - Connecting Southern Mumbai with Navi Mumbai

This is a much needed project which is long overdue.
I feel they missed a huge opportunity that they could have made it a road cum rail bridge. (Something like the BOGIBEEL bridge over Bramahaputra in Assam, only bigger and wider). The traffic of road and rail would have paid for it in no time.
Ideally it should be 2 broad gauge track for IR (preferably DFC specs with axel load of 32T), 4 Standard Gauge tracks for metro and 8 laned dual carriage way for motor vehicles.
It was planned before for road and rail bridge but not sure for the reason of it being shelved.
This would have vastly improved connectivity what with running metro trains between South Bombay, to Navi Mumbai, Western and central suburbs to Navi Mumbai and also could have run dedicated airport to airport express trains over it.

I agree. The new road will bring in more traffic as people will in the end hope to travel by road specially if it offers faster travel time. But road can only take so much traffic. A fast train link would make connectivity so much better.

Coastal authority clears 4.5-km elevated corridor between Sewri and Worli in Mumbai

Quote:
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) on Tuesday gave its nod to the 4.5-km elevated corridor between Sewri and Worli. The proposal has been earlier deferred by the authority, which had asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to conduct a public hearing on the project, specifically for the residents of Worli sea face, “considering the impact of environment at this location owing to the proposed elevated corridor”.

Anil Diggikar, chairman, MCZMA and principal secretary, environment, confirmed that the connector project has been approved. “We had asked them [MMRDA] to undertake a public consultation in the earlier meeting, which they have done,” said Diggikar.

The project, estimated to cost ₹1,276 crore, will connect Worli to the upcoming 22-km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) at Sewri. MTHL, a sea-bridge, will connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. The elevated corridor, which starts at Sewri railway station, will pass over Eastern Freeway, the monorail on Acharya Donde Marg, Dr Ambedkar Road, Senapati Bapat Marg and Dr Annie Besant Road.

According to MMRDA, 438 metres on both ends of the corridor falls under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ)-II. In the public consultation, MMRDA said, citizens had asked if the corridor can be built underground as it passes over congested areas and if it can also be connected to the coastal road project.

The MCZMA on Tuesday also gave CRZ clearance to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation’s (MMRC) Vidhan Bhavan station box and allied activities.

Meanwhile, the authority is yet to approve the multi-modal corridor between Virar-Alibaug, which was also discussed on Tuesday. MCZMA had earlier deferred the proposal, stating MMRDA must look at “minimal environmental damage”. “The project involves usage of forest land and mangroves. The authority needs a forest clearance,” Diggikar said.

I believe in the longer run, this would be super busy along with the sea links that will hug west coast of Mumbai. Would make it easy to exit any part of suburban Mumbai and central regions onward to the highways. Looking forward to their completion.

Re: Mumbai Trans Harbour Link - Connecting Southern Mumbai with Navi Mumbai

There are a number of interesting road projects going on in Mumbai to improve connectivity.

On among them is the Airoli - Katai Naka tunnel which is under-construction. This will greatly benefit those who live in Kalyan/Dombivli.

An overview of the project:

Soon, a freeway from Airoli to Kalyan

Quote:
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed to construct a freeway from Airoli (near Thane) to Katai Naka (near Kalyan). This freeway is set to benefit commuters coming from Mumbai and heading to Kalyan and Badlapur industrial estate.

The commuters coming from Nashik, Gujarat and Thane city will have a direct link to this freeway after it is constructed. The junction free route from Airoli to Katai Naka will be 12.3 km after the completion of the project. The estimated cost of constructing the freeway is 944 crores.

“The project includes construction of three lanes each for up and down traffic. The project is being executed in three phases. A consultant named STUP was appointed by MMRDA to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project and it was submitted in 2014,” said an MMRDA official. The first phase of the project includes a link between Thane-Belapur road and National Highway (NH)-4 near Mumbra bypass, the distance of which is around 11.8 km at present.

“The stretch includes 3.5km of NH4 and a tunnel cutting through Parsik Hill of 1.7km towards the end of NH4. The plan is to construct ramps (sloping surface) at both the ends of NH4 and Thane-Belapur road to connect each other after elevating the tunnel for better alignment,” added the official.
Some elevation and plans:

The longest steel deck weighing as much as six Boeing aircraft was launched as part of the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) project.

MTHL reduces the travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just 20 minutes from the present two hours.

Err. A bit of correction in the above line:

MTHL is expected to reduce the travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just 20 minutes from the present two hours, once opened to the traffic (expected by Q3 2023).

Still quite a bit to go. Of the total 32 OSDs on MTHL, only 14 have now been launched (ref 1).

Re: Mumbai Trans Harbour Link - Connecting Southern Mumbai with Navi Mumbai

Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link will open for traffic in November 2023

Quote:
Once the bridge opens for traffic, it will be possible to travel from Sewri in central Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai in 15 to 20 minutes.

Vehicles would not have to stop on the bridge for paying toll, thanks to the Open Tolling System, Shinde said.

This system is currently used in Singapore, said officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), a Maharashtra government agency, which is the implementing authority for the six-lane MTHL project, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The MMRDA on Wednesday successfully launched the first and the longest Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) in package-2 of MTHL in the presence of Chief Minister Shinde, the authority said in a press release. The steel deck is 180 metres long and weighs 2,300 metric tonnes. Package-2 has 32 OSD spans, 15 of which have already been launched, the release said.

My only concern is how will they carry out open tolling when many vehicles on road still do not have working FASTAGs.I stay in Navi Mumbai and frequently come across extra intelligent people who argue with the toll booth operators regarding double toll rates for cash payments and cause a huge traffic congestion behind them.

They will probably use the new planned method or GPS based toll collection.

To be really useful for the masses, they should introduce buses from/to the nearest local stations on both sides.

Double decker bus ride on the bridge would be wonderful .
