Help/Advice Looking to drive from Chembur (Mumbai) to Kankavli via the old Mumbai - Goa Highway. Has anyone driven on this route recently? Heard patches near Lanja & Rajapur are in terrible condition however no first hand information. I can take the Mumbai - Kolhapur - Gaganbawda-Kankavli route however wish to experience the old route as post this I wont be getting an opportunity for a drive to Konkan anytime soon. The Mumbai-Pune-Satara-Kolhapur-Gaganbawda-Kankavli route is no more exciting to me.

You can take the Amba Ghat if you are bored with Ganganbawda. Also, at Gaganbawda resurfacing work was on-going. Nearly 70% was completed but the 30% was in really bad condition.
The roads between Lanja and Rajapur are already 4 laned. You can go via Karad-Malkapur-Lanja-Rajapur-Kankavali.
Drive safe !

I completed Kochi to Mumbai via NH66 on Sunday. While coming from Kochi/Goa, roads upto 12km before Lanja are excellent 4 lane highway. But from thereon to Sawarde (before Chiplun) are in terrible shape. In fact for most of that section its a gravel road, just cannot call it an NH. 4-laning work is going on but they have not bothered about the existing road that's being used.
That section of 90km is one of the worst I have experienced and had to really take it slow, took around 2.5 hours to complete including a 20 minute block due to a stalled bus at a ghat curve.
From my hotel in Kankavli to Mulund took 13 hours taking the turn off to Pali from NH66 at Vakan Phata and joining the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at Khalapur toll.

Thanks. How about Malkapur - Patal (refer screen shot 1)? Gmaps shows 9.5 hours in total.
Or as you said go to Lanja from Malkapur and then to Kankavli? (Refer screenshot 2) Gmaps shows 10.5 Hours in total i.e. 1 hour additional.

Not really sure about the internal route between Malkapur and Pachal. The 4 lane route would definitely be faster I suppose than taking an unknown internal route.
Noob question - Is it possible to take this new NH-17 while driving from Bangalore->Goa and back?
If yes, what would be the best way to plan this route on GMaps and will it be better and/or faster than any current routes? If anybody has traveled this route recently, I would like a Knowledge Transfer from you if possible :)

Of course possible. Drive towards west coast and hit Mangalore and drive upwards north to Goa all through NH66. You may need a halt in Mangalore. There are shorter routes, but since the idea is to explore the route, you may take this, at least one way.

Fifteen days after 10 members of a family were killed in a head-on collision with a truck on Mumbai-Goa Highway, the police have identified 41 potential accident spots and found several loopholes on the highway, such as missing signages for road diversions.
Quote:
“As of now, we have figured around 41 spots and the contractors have been asked to make the diversion boards within 24 hours. The truck that killed 10 people, had no fitness certificate as well, hence, the truck was not supposed to be on the road in the first place. We have also asked the contractors to put radium reflectors and blinkers wherever necessary,” said Raigad superintendent of police, Somnath Gharge.

The last time I travelled, the roads between Bangalore and Mangalore (outer) had a lot of bad sections. From Mangalore to Goa border are the newly paved roads. However, the route is very scenic. Drive safe though, some of our reckless drivers ... the moment they see a good road they think its an F1 track .
Hi,
I have to travel to Kadwai, little ahead of Chiplun. Traveling with a 1 yr baby. What's the road condition now? Until now we always took the Mumbai - Satara - Umbraj - Chiplun - Kadwai route. It's a 100 KM's longer but the drive was good for most of the part.
Was thinking of taking the Nh66 this time. Any inputs are welcome.

I used to watch updates of the Mumbai-Goa Highway since past 5-6 years, after seeing the progress my guess is that this project would be fully completed by 2025-26
Although I was happy that this project when completed will provide an alternate route and smooth ride to Goa, Mangalore and Kochi but there are some constraints regarding speed and there are a lot of black spots in Sindhdurg (Kharepatan to Patradevi)
most important black spot is this one near Zarap where due to LA issues they failed to build an underpass.

The Transport Minister states the work on this route will be completed by Dec 2023, but there are sections on this route that pass through towns (around/before Chiplun, i guess) and i see no work being done... not even a pillar or roads dug up to give an impression for work commencement on what basis is this commitment made then.. i am apolitical but i really feel Mr Gadkari is very efficient unsure if he is being misled or just shooting statements (latter seems unlikely)...
Karwar Tunnel completed looks like within few months it will be fully refined & ready
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQQXe4CA03I
With this Karwar is done, Bhatkal Flyover, Kumta Bypass is still pending to be completed
Honnavar Flyover, no light at all regarding it's construction
Here's the Environmental Clearance pdf on how Kumta bypass will look like (alignment options)
Kumta Bypass 0_0_1118125012151AlignmentOptionsReport.pdf
incase if it's not visible then I have made a rough drawing of the bypass
and as usual locals had protested against this as well, (
when the bypass would have saved their town in many ways) I just hope things clear out soon so that the ride from Karwar to Honnavar would be smooth
