Best trip so far: Norway. (Travelogue here (A glimpse of Norway - a week on the roads))

Next Best ones
Black forest area (South of Germany) is one of my all time favorites. Lots of curves and hills filled with nature.

I have been there numerous times and there is always something new to explore.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

Another drive that I would like to mention, is the one we took from Bangalore to Hyderabad during the month of August this year. Empty roads and great weather helped us reach Hyderabad in 7 hours rather than 9.
It was quite heartwarming to see the rivers overflowing and the surroundings lush green (which is a rare sight on this highway).

Best drive for me was last year's drive around Austria's Grossglockner mountain pass.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

There are few drives stuck with for long as I can remember.
Roadtrip to Kaza is till date one of the most memorable ones. and I guess it stands true for quite a lot of people who have driven up the Himalayan Range. The trip made me fall in love with Duster which we had rented.

Another would be the solo-trip I had taken from Mumbai to Gokarna. Such a bliss of a journey it was.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

Best Road trip for me was Pune to Shimla way back in March 2017.

Cheetah (Xuv-500) was a breeze on the highways and I felt like king of Yamuna Expressway or one may say "kabhi kabhi lagta hai apun hi bhagwan hai".

The trip involved its own adventure and the entire trip length was just 11 days.

Day 1: Pune to Indore (Night Drive)
Day 2: Rest in the day @ Indore, Indore to Gwalior (Night Drive)
Day 3: Stay in Gwalior (Hometown)
Day 4: Gwalior to Agra (Sight Seeing) -> Agra to Mashobra Shimla (Night Drive 13 hours with very few stops)

Day 5: Shimla sight seeing and rest
Day 6: Mashobra - Narkanda (Private Cab)
Snow started on the way

Day 7: Mashobra - lazy day in snow

Your most memorable drive / ride-img20190205wa0002.jpg

Day 8: Mashobra - lazy day in snow
Day 9: Mashobra to Chandigarh @ Friends place(Day Drive) -> Chandigarh to Jaipur (night Drive)
Day 10: Rest Day in Jaipur
Day 11: Jaipur to Pune via Sendhwa (15 hrs plus drive)

This trip was random and we just went away without expecting much but then we received best snowfall in Shimla in the month of march (which is little rare), Sun temple private tour in Gwalior (Courtesy a good friend), almost a private tour @ Taj Mahal in Agra, best Chinese food in Agra and so on.
It was all Sheer luck and timely advice from friends.

I am going to pen this travelogue soon, now that I have found the google photos backup.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

The most memorable drive for me in the recent time have to be the one from Dehradun to Diu & Somnath. We were 3 friends who just went out in search of good roads & good food and ended up in Diu.

We went on with the journey following this route:

Day1: Dehradun to Ajmer (via meerut, New Delhi, Neemrana) we took a detour to Sambhar salt lake as well, which turned out to be one of the best decisions.

Day 2: Ajmer to Ahmedabad (again a detour to Patan to visit the famous Rani ki Vav & some spicy kathiyavadi food). The roads on this stretch are just amazing, limiting the speed to 90kmph (the legal speed) is a challenge.

Day 3: Ahmedabad to Diu (Bad roads but good gujarati food enroute)

Day 4: We just went around to visit Diu’s beaches, churches, forts, temples) Diu to home to amazing portuguese food.

Day 5: A day trip to somnath and then this small beach village called Madhavpur. Madhavpur beach was unlike any beach we had ever visited.

Day 6: Diu to Udaipur (Via Bhavnagar & Ahmedabad) The drive to bhavnagar was rough due to some very bad roads but the food at Bhavnagar was totally worth it.

Day 7: Udaipur to New Delhi (We did some local sightseeing in the morning at Udaipur)

Day 8: Back to Dehradun.

Overall we drove for around 4000kms in 8 days and met with a lot of local folks, shared their experiences & tried local cuisines.

Sharing some pictures from the trip.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

For me it’s certainly driving on the German Autobahns.
Recently drove to Frankfurt from Berlin and it was my first long long drive (1300km) in Germany. Had a super time on the no limit sections and was also able to hit 200kmph without thinking too much for the first time.

Also it’s so easy to do long distances here, I was the solo driver and we did 650km in 7 hours with just one bio break of 15 mins. It will be impossible in India.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

Every journey leaves you with a lot of memories and it is very difficult to pick one. However, I had the advantage of able to drive during the lock down and it was something to speak about. My father-in-law was stuck in a hotel room in Chennai when he had gone there on a project. The lock down was announced and we thought things would ease in a few days and we will be able to fly him back to Pune. But as the lock down got extended we had to have him in the hotel with no choice. After a few days, given his age he started to have health issues and largely because he had limited access to his medications and a limited menu of the hotel which deprived him of nutrition. We realized that it was time to bring him home and there was no choice but for me to drive down from Pune to Chennai and bring him back.
I tried for E pass from both TN and MH govt websites and I was fortunate (and help from a resource in TN) we got the same issued from the TN Govt. The pass allowed me to travel from Pune to Chennai and return within a 3 day window.

I left on 5th May at 12:30 in the night from Pune. While the highway was largely empty other than truckers, I hardly saw any cars. Most of the cars that I saw were travelling within MH and not outside the state. The check posts on every district border in MH was nothing but a waste of time and all they did was take you name and number and none of them bothered to even check if you had a pass. (yes, by May most of them looked exhausted with the COVID situation). Entry into Karnataka was smooth and other than 1 check post near Davangere, nowhere I was stopped. The highway had hardly any traffic. I was in Bangalore by 11:30 a.m. I took the NICE Road from the Tumkur road and head straight to Hosur and entered TN. I reached the hotel in Chennai by 5 p.m. I had a warm welcome where my father-in-law was all smiles seeing me. The entire duration of the lock down, he was stuck in this room and he had not met anyone other than the couple of people the hotel had to help the 3 guests who were staying in the hotel. So, on seeing me, I believe it was like a freedom ticket to him. I slept that night in the same hotel and we left for Pune in the morning at 9:30. We stopped to fill fuel at 9:45 am.

To my surprise, the highway had no traffic. It was zilch. We reached Bangalore near electronic city by 12 noon. Yes, there is no mistake in the timing. We reached in just 2.5 hrs. We had no one stopping us at the check posts and the roads being empty, my Tata Hexa ensured she conquered the roads and had no one in sight. We stopped at Adayar Anand Bhavan near Naraya Hrudayala and packed lunch and dinner and 2 flasks filled with coffee as I saw no restaurant open in the highway between Bangalore and Pune. This was the only one that caught my attention. We left from the place around 1 pm and we entered MH border at 8:15 p.m. We lost one hour in the MH check post which again had nothing to do with checking passes or anything. They were just badly organized and had all the trucks and cars in a single file and wasted time only to note the name and number. They had a tent, one had to park the car a distance away from the place and walk down to the tent and give your details. We again lost an hour at a check post near Satara. Finally we reached home at 1:10 am.

I loved the way HEXA behaved on the highway during the entire 2500 km journey. The visibility, the height and those 19 inchers ensured all the potholes were swallowed and hardly any were transferred into the cabin. This was my longest drive (Solo one way) in HEXA ever since I got her in Jan 2020 and I loved every minute of the drive to Chennai and back.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

One of my memorable drive was to danushkodi Rameswaram. It was a delight to drive on the road leading to the edge at danushkodi, but we were not lucky enough to get to the edge due to sea erosion a year back.

Lovely danushkodi

Am confused, I thought you were Gujju based on your padmini post but you seem to have some pretty intricate knowledge of Kollywood that outsiders won't have. You Tamil also?

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

My memorable ride was circa 2004 - Hero Honda CBZ Bandra Mumbai to Indirapuram, Alibaug with a pillion. Did about 80kph almost all the way through. The bike performed remarkably well in terms of handling and dynamics.

My most memorable DRIVE was Adelaide to Sydney, Canberra and Back - 3,400 kms in 10 days in a Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel Highlander. Hit a top (recorded on Garmin GPS) speed of 208 kmph on a long stretch through the Aussie outback. The car felt very confident and rooted to the road.

One of most memorable trips had to be Chandigarh to Hyderabad and back. Covered it in 2.5 days just because of the awesome vistas that make you stop everywhere and break out the camera.

Re: Your most memorable drive / ride

Sorry, I don't have pics of my most memorable ride (to date). The reason is quite simple, I & my co-passengers were scared to death to even think of clicking a photo. Full story below:

My wife & I were driving to Badrinath in September 2018. We started late night/early morning from Delhi & managed to reach Joshimath by 530 PM. I asked the locals about road conditions from Joshimath to Badrinath & was told that except for one bad stretch of approx 500 meters, the roads are pretty doable. The bad stretch was a landslide (monsoon season sees a lot of them) which was 80% repaired by BRO. I took my chances & went ahead with the journey, confident that the City will manage to pass through.

It got dark by the time we reached the "bad stretch"- It was muddy & slushy but there were tire marks which I decided to follow. I was able to cross the first few 100 meters easily, there was a hairpin bend & the concrete road became visible again- I was overjoyed that hurdle crossed. Little did I know what lay ahead for me, just after the hairpin bend there was another slush/mud of about 200 meters. I decided to follow the tire marks again & bam, the wheels got stuck.

This was my first getting tryst with getting "stuck" in slush. I tried accelerating twice but soon realized that it is of no use. Suddenly a few local jeep drivers started piling up behind & in front of me. One of them shouted, "Move ahead fast, look up, there is a landslide again". I looked at could see stones dropping. It was dark & I was genuinely scared.

Two cabbies came to my help but they were not too hands-on with Automatics & couldn't be of help. Unfortunately, the tyes were stuck in slush so much that even a rope or cardboard (which we tried) couldn't provide enough traction. And the pieces of stone kept falling, adding to my woes.

The cabbies went back without saying anything. I asked my wife to walk ahead far enough so that she reaches where she could actually have concrete road to stand on. I just couldn't fathom the courage to leave my car behind & walk with her, still trying to put some stones underneath the tires to get traction.

Suddenly I saw the two cabbies returning & along with them, there were 8-9 more locals. Truth be told, coming from Delhi/NCR, I got scared for a minute, seeing so many locals but they proved to be my saviors that day. They asked me to get in the car & keep it in the lowest gear possible. 5 of them lifted the car (by hand) from the front & 4-5 of them went back to push the car. They literally lifted my car & placed both the front wheels to the side, on a bed of bricks/stones they had already placed. As soon as they placed the tires on bricks, I was given the green signal to move forward with full acceleration & everyone just got behind my car to push it. The car was out of the landslide area in the next 1 minute. I couldn't thank them enough & they refused to take any money from me, despite my insistence.

The whole ordeal lasted for an hour & I still wonder what if they were not able to lift up my car by hands!!
