According to police sources, K Sathish Kumar (29), from Poonamalle near Chennai , was driving the lorry towards Bengaluru. He was accompanied by N Arun (34) a driver hailing from Coimbatore. When they reached Melumalai near Shoolagiri, some miscreants waylaid the vehicle and allegedly attacked both the drivers after blindfolding them. Their hands were reportedly tied by the robbers who deputed three persons to prevent them from escaping.

Meanwhile, the rest of the gang drove off with the lorry and the 14,340 mobile phones on it. The lorry was later abandoned at Azhagubhavi, 10 km from Melumalai.

Am not too sure. But a similar incident in all probability. The date stamp in the CCTV footage dates back to 2017. Not sure when the video was recorded. But just look at the level of skills developed by the gang. It just looks like a scene out of movie clip!

I wonder how did the gang get information on the shipment and route. There may be some insider hands here.

Shipping companies should start real time monitoring of this kind of high value shipments. GPS locators, cameras in driver's cabin and container transmitting real time images to an operations center might help.

The video shows a failed attempt. It's hilarious infact. Look at :17s, the bike loses controls and the two on it falls on the road, and then guy who got on the truck jumps of the truck and goes back.

I think the truck was hijacked and taken off Highway for unloading, no one would risk unloading on a open highway with night patrol boleros running to&fro.

Also, this level of loot can't be pulled off without an insider. Think about this, the looters must have the following information to execute this
1. Exact description of goods
2. Quantity of goods
3. Net worth of goods
4. Route planned for the trip
5. Approx timing of reaching the hijack spot
6. Driver lunch/break timings
7. Local patrol vehicle usual timings

They had to plan for
1. Manpower to unload and load
2. Sharing of the loot
3. Ideally this would have been loaded onto another truck, not 6-7 SUV/MPV
The more vehicles and people get involved, the more chances of getting caught.
4. A few wicked masterminds in the background have worked really well

Honestly disposing off this sort of loot won't be a challenge for someone in the same field. Assuming that majority of the loot was phones valuing more than 30k each.

This is a daring robbery that seems to have been perfectly executed, or they just got lucky and did not know what the consignment was until they opened it up?

The company will know the IMEI no of these phones plus other ways to track so how are the crooks going to keep the loot from going to lead back to themselves?

No brainer that someone inside either the logistics agency or the manufacturer was involved if it all was part of the perfect plan.

Trust the cops to nab these fellas and i hope that this is all not part of some other bigger sinister plan.

Nope. That's a different case. Smaller, 8cr deal. This is a 15 cr one.

Mobile cargo theft is not uncommon. Couple of years back Samsung truck was hijacked in Delhi Noida border. Robbers were later caught with cargo intact.
