Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

Good Thought, but not fool proof. Goons, Anti-social elements, contractors/political affiliates wanting to make some money, can snap the connection, that is protruding, anytime to get some work. The fundamental question is, do we need such things at all. I can understand, if this is done on a road that is not lt properly or at places where extra caution is required. Looks like it is done on some posh area. Apologies if anyone staying near got offended.

Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

BMC has got tons of money in its deposits, due to the pandemic, there aren't many venues to spend the money and not many opportunities for brasses to earn alleged commission in the election year. So maybe some bright minds have come up with this idea, to create a corpus for the elections due next year.

What else could be the reason to apply lipstick on a buffalo when road conditions themselves are pathetic.

Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

Rather than these illuminated kerb stones, BMC should invest that money in the pilot project that they had started, and install more of these LED strips at traffic lights. They make much more sense safety wise for car drivers at night and in the monsoons.

Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

Since this would work only at night what is the point of having an illuminated kerb?? Won't reflectors serve the purpose better?? And considering our situation during monsoons this portion would be submerged most likely and the chances of someone getting electrocuted as other members have pointed out is highly likely.

Just another way of wasting tax payers money just like how they plant flowers on the marine drive stretch every few months and let them die

To be fair though, vandalism is pretty common in major European cities as well. The only places where you don't see such forms of vandalism are either small and rich police states or places with a strong cultural inclination against vandalism (like Japan).
When you want to design anything for 'public use' in India, it's a good idea to test the concept in a zoo full of chimpanzees. If the chimps can't break it, the average indian citizen won't be able to destroy it.

Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

Seems to me some babu was browsing the web, chanced upon this, pulled some strings and procured this and got some nice payback. Little or no thought on practicality of such implementations. When you have dirt and mud getting caked on such road features, where such feature is lit by LED or painted with luminescent paint is irrelevant. Cleaning mechanism is more important.

What was the need for this? The road and the curb were fine as it is. All that was needed was to paint the herb with a fluorescent yellow paint.
There are several other areas which need urgent attention of BMC engineers and officers i.e. broken pavement, incomplete concretization of roads/curbs/junctions, poor one-way planning/signage/markings

I suppose in India the best way is to do fewer but durable things. Public servants should focus on that and as far as possible stay away from doing fancy things.

Re: Now Mumbai gets illuminated kerb stones

We should update our basic infrastructure rather than pointless blingy stuff. Besides getting kickbacks from their friends, I don't know why local governments in India come up with ridiculous ideas like lit traffic poles, kerbs, or zebra crossings.

So many countries in N America and Europe have much worse weather - but simple infrastructure ensures road safety for drivers.

Sooner or later some TV serial or Bollywood Director will bring love birds of their story around here in the dead of the night, when there is less traffic. They will shoot a dance number with free "strobe" lighting effects paid for by the Bruhan Mumbai Municipality.
