If the truck driver ran off, how do we know the truck's brakes had failed?
I remember an incidence once, when a car was overtaking another car from the right side i.e oncoming lane when all of a sudden the car which was being overtaken picked up speed, preventing the overtaker from overtaking him, resulting with teh overtaker being in the oncoming lane for say 30 secs.
During this time, a trucker was coming and he was on collision course with the overtaker and hence he applied his brakes fully, which resulted in the load carrying area skidding and sliding to the right with the drivers compartment maintaining its line.
Now suppose that was teh case here?
Say the Scorpio was coming at a high speed and in the line of the trucker, who braked hard, causing his half of his vehicle to slide and hit the scorpio, killing those people?
Please note that the latter half of the truck is in the correct lane.

It could be that the Truck had jumped from the oncoming lane over the divider into the scorpio, the picture suggests that the scorpio driver did not even get time to react. The broken front axle on the truck suggests the axle breaking over while jumping the divider.

from the picture it does not look like there was a Divider there.. Maybe the truck was trying to take a Right when it hit the Scorpio.

Satish, if people had any sense, they would turn just as you illustrated.

But they don't. Also, that only works if everybody stops at the intersection and lets everyone have their turn.

But you know that no one stops. Everybody just keeps going, hoping no one will collide. Given that, most people have found that the safest way to turn right is to get on the right-hand (i.e., wrong) side, near the corner of the road, and turn right when one sees an opening, then getting to the left side of the lane.

Can't say whose fault it was since the Scorpio was at a high speed and must've rammed into the truck's axle. After collision, the truck must've come onto the wrong side and rested OVER that Scorpio. Obvously, the pic was taken after the Scorpio was removed from under the truck.

P.S. Speaking of wrong side, I'm close to the PB road and there are cars and trucks actually going at a high speed on the wrong side!!!! The road is a segmented road, yet people drive onto oncoming traffic!

exactly, there is a limit an after-accident investigation can lead us to.

I believe speed is responsible for 90% of the accidents. 1% it's sheer bad luck. The rest of the time, always assume the other driver is an idiot.

The truck seems to be at an angle, with the front portion protruding into the wrong side of the road; there is clearly no divider. This suggests, as pointed out by others, that the truck driver may have been braking hard and skidding. It is also possible that the impact with the Scorpio (front/right side of both vehicles) could have caused the truck to turn around a little; the driver may have lost steering control upon impact. Lastly note that usually truck drivers tend to drive towards the middle of narrow roads when fully loaded, because loaded trucks can easily lose control and tip over due to road camber/rough edges -- this is especially true when they take turns.

So without further details it is premature to put the blame on the truck driver. I personally feel that SUVs give an illusion of safety, but they could be very dangerous on our narrow roads when driven by inexperienced drivers. In this case Raghu (27) was driving the Scorpio and was apparently the nephew of Kodandarama (40), who was in the vehicle. Was Kodandarama the owner and did he hand over the Scorpio to his nephew? Happens frequently on long drives. And did Raghu have experience driving an SUV and at least did he have a license for driving it? These questions need to be answered.

The truck driver can shed some light on what exactly happened. Of course it could well have been the truck driver's fault. Since he fled the scene, we may not know whether he was drunk -- always a possibility, especially if the accident happened at night.
