Google Maps gets new 'Immersive View' feature; Combines Street view with Satellites

Google has rolled out a new mode for its Maps, called "Immersive View". The new feature is said to be sort of a street view from the sky; in the sense that it allows users to look at a location from above, before dropping down to specific spots via Street View. The Maps are overlayed with live busyness and traffic information via a quasi-augmented reality.

The images for the new Immersive View are all computer-generated, combining Street View with Google's Satellite captures. The data from both are then fused together and set in a precisely scaled world. The Immersive view mode is said to offer impressive levels of zoom taken from Google Earth but applied on a neighbourhood level.

The Immersive view feature is said to work on most devices. However, it is currently limited to neighbourhoods in San Fransico, New York, Los Angeles, London & Tokyo. Google will be adding more cities in the future.

I use Google Maps for these kinds of functions, especially for local searches but for driving I prefer HereWeGo maps and surprisingly, it has surpassed Google Maps in usage as well according to data. That's crazy!

While good to "experience" landmarks of many foreign cities, don't pin any hopes for ANY Indian city or rural areas.

The babus in north block, living in 18th century, have set a limit on resolution of some 10m or more I think in google maps. That's why even as of today, we can't zoom in to sharper level in any city or countryside, in name of security! How long for immersive view of Indian cities?

Good initiative by Google Maps. However, as we have seen in the ongoing Russia Ukraine conflict, the US will not shy away from weaponizing every form of tech - Google Maps included. Google should NOT be given access to map Indian cities, roads and establishments. These fancy features can come back to bite India in the future.

The Indian govt. has done the right thing by keeping restrictions on which features it can role out in India. If Indians are dying to try such features, then they should build their own tech rather than rely solely on companies like Google.

Foreign intelligence agencies will always have the data downloaded in any even of war, if they want, whether Google puts it on the web or some Indian company. Security is a bogey used by Indian government to deny technology to Indians. And don't even get me started on restrictions on drones. Seems like all other countries in the world have no risk due to maps but only India.

You know there was an Indian company named WoNoBo (World with No Boundaries) based in Bangalore which wanted to map India and compete with Google and likes. They despite being an Indian company, were denied the permit by the Babus in North block, its CEO told me. Security is a bogey for babus to exert control and let the things be the way they have been in the "golden" license Raj!

This is really academic in Indian context. It is unlikely we'll get street view, let alone immersive view.

Threat and vulnerability are very important for security and therefore actions have to be taken accordingly. Even societies have various restrictions in place. We must understand our country has terror threats from many angles. It may be more for Israel and less for some Scandinavian countries.
