I have seen two vehicles near Kolkata that had different numbers in the front and rear plates

One was a golden indigo that had KA01 XXXX in front and KA51 XXXX in the rear (same 4 digits). The other was a black santro that had totally different numbers in front and rear.

Unfortunately, I couldnt take the pics.

Is this legal using any loophole?

Please see the articles mentioned below regarding Number (License) Plates.

As per Transport rules and regulations it is mandatory to have number plates in english alphabets and Arabic numbers ( the ones we are using now). Additional numbers in regional languages is allowed along with the English.
In Bangalore I have noticed some 2 wheelers with only Kannada number plates. See the attached DH clipping regarding this issue.

How do the Authorities allow this.? And what action they are taking?

A few weeks back, There was a new item in DH. The Transport Authorities about 4 years ago sent a notification that all vehicles registered in Karnataka should have separate number plates in both english and kannada.
Since no vehicle manufacturer provides provision for 4 number plates ( 2 at the front and 2 at the rear) and the RTOs were in a fix as how to implement this. Hence this order was neither implemented nor revoked. A few weeks back this notification has surfaced again and the authorities don't know what to do.!!!

My car has DL plates( according to DTP norms). But sadly here in Maharashtra, i find all sorts of word-arts on number plates and no body even bothers to take steps.Have seen people fined for improper/broken number plates in Delhi, but in here its who cares.Dunno about Karnataka though.

Have a look at this one but don't strain your eyes much and excuseme for the quality.
i couldn't take a clear pic from my mobile since i was driving myself.
This was on Hosur Road, Bengaluru

The number read something as KA xx MBTR xxxx
Now when did the KA RTO start giving more than 2 alphabets??
Or have the vehicles grown so much overnight??

My guess is that even after the Temporary registration(having alphabets TR), became permanent, the owner didn't want to leave the "TR".

Is this a special case or is this a mistake?

Btw, does Tamilnadu have such an option wherein we could transfer old registration numbers to a new vehicle? I could get that done, but coming to think of it now, if thats allowed then we could easily procure an old vehicle with a fancy number for cheaper stakes than getting a new one right..., food for though mates!

Cheers

Haryana has that option. One doesn't need to scrap the old car either. You can get a new number for the old car.

Regarding trying to source an old car with a fancy number for cheaper than the number - people with fancy numbers are really smart. More often than not a person selling the car with a fancy numbers clearly mentions beforehand that the number will not be sold with the car. Something like an insurance with a hefty no claim bonus being not sold with the car.

Identify the vehicle number.

When will Bangalore police crackdown on these kind of violations?
