Funny we haven't discussed illegal plates before. I never knew local language plates were illegal. There are so many of these around in Bangalore.

I see all kinds of crazy plates in Bangalore. The most irritating is a Swift with miniature fonts on a really reflective plate. Another one is a white Civic with the number plate (again with very small fonts) pasted on one side of the bumper

How on earth can these guys get away from the cops? Anything works with the cops I guess.

Other day i saw a Tempo Traveller with the last 4 digits actually wiped off. It was not a case of a broken plate either.

Also, for some reason, many out of state regn vehicles have the beginning of their number plates broken too. Specially the first two letters. hmmm....

Saw this in BLR: I thought, it might be one of the crazy guys who write their name on the plate and put the number somewhere else. On closer examination it was KA-51-M-xxxx written in italics. And, the four digit number was (deliberately) written so small that it looked like a design pattern under the name.

There are number plates in Pune I've seen which carry the registration number 4141, tweaked in such a way that it reads as "DADA" (read in Devanagari script). What are they trying to prove?

Plates in any language other than English Letter & Numericals are ILLEGAL - Period !! But in our great country, anything goes. There are atleast 10 to 20% two wheelers in Gurgaon WITHOUT a rear number plate !! Some of these are driven by cops !!!

There are the usual lalaji's with a half broken off number plate - who never bother to replace it. They take great pride in saying. "Police ne roka maine kaha - abhi parking mein toot gayi" (Cops stopped me, I said it just broke in the parking lot) DISGUSTING is the feeling that comes over me when I come accross such lawbreakers.

Then there is an accident, there is no rear no plate so no one got the number. It is criminal negligence on part of the police I feel. They will jump at someone talking on a cell phone but turn a blind eye to a missing number plate ! P A T H E T I C !!

I wish the transport minister reads this some day. I have sent Hindustan Times a mail on this - so far NOTHING

There is very strict rules about the character size, font, colour etc of the registration plates. Maybe the cops don't know that (like all the 99.99% rules except the Book & Paper rule they don't know about). Maybe it is like the fancy number that the poor cop is scared to flag down. "Do you know who I am?"

The security plates is the right way to go. Like all good things its enforcement is getting delayed and delayed. I recently got one for my Fiesta. I had a plastic one before (with correct lettering) but I wasn't comfy about it. IMO, the new one looks great and is a matter of pride to me.

KA had made it a requirement for govt vehicles to write it in Kannada script sometime in early 90s. So, private vehicles also followed suit. A friend from there joked that if a cop pulls him over, the poor cop won't be neither able to read his number (being in Kannada script), or understand his speech (ancient formal Kannada from his birthplace in north KA).

Malayalam script also has numerals. The old Ramayanam had page numbers printed in them. I don't think anyone here under 90 would be able to read them.
