This is a diplomatic plate (does not follow Indian rules for number scheme).

Have the formatting rules changed recently? That doesn't look like any diplomatic/consular plate I've ever seen before.

This would be a more appropriate thread for the opening post:

This is a German plate (new EU format that has "D" + Circle on blue vertical bar on left).

EDIT : This must a a carnet car (and not diplomatic).

Thanks, but my question was more about following Indian diplomatic/consular plate standards.

That's a civilian German (Euro-standard) plate if I understood correctly, so are diplomats/consular staff allowed to import cars directly into India and retain their local country plates without changing over to Indian XX CD/CC XXXX format (blue with while lettering)?

Edit: Your EDIT sort of cleared that up

IIRC Carnet allows users to import their vehicles for a period up to 6 months for exhibitions / shows / etc. without having to pay the entire import duty.

However, it is unlikely that this is a carnet vehicle, as I am pretty confident that Germany is LHD and this car is a RHD. Most likely illegal number plates - and no cop wants to stop a fancy expensive 'sports' car.

It is system that allows Tourists to take their own cars (or even travel via their own cars) across countries.

Limitation of LHD/RHD is only for registration. Cars that are brought-in temporarily for trade / Carnet / Defense need not follow these limitations (such cars need not register with RTO).

There is a recent thread on this forum about traveling to Europe from India. They used a car from India and would have traveled through countries with LHD as well as RHD diving.

This particular car might have fake plates (not sure if Germany would allow a number to be "BERLIN").

I meant that cars sold in Germany are typically Left Hand Drive vehicles, which this Audi is not. Therefore the chances of the number plates being illegal are considerably higher than if the car was brought through Carnet (in which case it would have been a LHD).

Yes, this one seems dubious.

How did you figure out LHD / RHD from this picture ?

If you look closely, you can see the MMI Screen and the aluminium finish interior panelling - tilted towards the driver.

Check this one out. Number 5880 (or 5888) styled to look like his name SAAD. Very innovative!
