Actually he got the number for his soon to be purchased Fortuner. Talk about wasting money!

Thanks! I had no idea that zeros weren't prefixed in registration numbers earlier!

Today's Bangalore mirror offers a different explanation via its front page story - fake number plate.

Gujarat? ADI is the Railways code for Ahmedabad Junction railway station.

Re: Pics of weird and wacky mod jobs!

I understand his affection for language. But seriously, what if someone wants to report a hit and run or something. I know Tamil, but i cant remember this very easily.

Moderators, this picture was taken without the consent of the owner, dint know how to mask the number and show what i wanted to show . Remove if needed.

Spotted this on RV Road, Blore few days back.

Shows utter callousness and disregard for rules.

How is the numbering system for cabs here in Bangalore? How did you figure out it was a white board number?

KA NN Mx series is usually private cars. Similarly KA NN Ex and Hx are two-wheelers. KA NN Ax I think are autos, and Jx / Wx are Meru-type cabs (this last I might be confusing with Mumbai). KA 01-06, 41-43 & 50-53 are all Bangalore city or commuter-country.

For private cars and LMVs, M, N, P, Z series and their extensions like MA, MB, NA, NB and so on, are used.

A, B, C, D are used for Transport vehicles (Trucks, Autos, Buses, Cabs etc). E, H, K, L, Q, R (not sure), S are used for Two wheelers.

T is used for tractors and trailers. F is used by State Transport Undertakings (KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, NEKRTC). G is used for Govt vehicles.

The remaining letters, I am not sure where they are being used.

For example, a yellow board cab registration will look like this:

KA-01-A-9999
01- The RTO depending on the area of the address

A- the series running. In cabs and yellow boards, this starts of with no alphabets, ex- KA 01 9999. Then A,B,C,D, AA, AB, AC, AD. The series moves on as more cars are registered or if a special number is chosen , it can go to the series like AC, AD were that number is available.

For private vehicles-
KA 01 MR 9999

The series were M,N,P,Z for 4 wheelers, this was when the new type registration started. After this got over, it is now MA,MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MJ, MK, ML , MM, MN, MP, MQ, MR, MS, MT, MU, and goes on.

In this case, the yellow board has MQ which is meant for a private vehicle, and it is KA 04 and for the 04 RTO, MQ series has not been reached as far as I know , and this is an old Indica, hence the posting of that picture.

Autos/ Cabs share the same series as with yellow board cabs like AB, A, B . C etc.
KA 06 is for Tumkur RTO.
KA 41 42 are Blore outskirts namely Ramnagar and Devnahalli which is why many Toyota test vehicles are registered KA 41 since their factory is located there.
50-53 are almost Bangalore namely Yelahankha, Bannerghatta, Nelamangala, KR Puram in the same order.

If you notice, there are no I, O in any series since they can be confused with 1 and 0.

As I have mentioned earlier, this is because the first owner has paid a premium and obtained a fancy no. If the required no is already taken in the currently running series, the next available series will be issued. For example, if a person wants a no 1111, this no in the current running series, say ME, is already issued to someone else. So, the no is checked in the next available series which is MF. If it is available in that series it will be issued, or else it moves on to the next series.

This is how the Indica might have got the MQ series and AFAIK, 8181 is one the more popular nos here in Karnataka.

Slight Correction.

KA 41 is Rajarajeshwarinagar, KA 42 is Ramanagar and Devanahalli is KA 43.
