accident in North carolina, one of my colleagues involved

moral of the story, don't swerve, unless it's a rock you are trying to avoid. Even if he had crashed into the merging car (remote possibility), he would have a damaged car, nothing more.

Let the crumple zones do their work.

Fire & Police Briefs

Two in critical condition after wreck

JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRE REPORT

YADKINVILLE — A one-car wreck on Interstate 77 yesterday left two people in

critical condition and closed the northbound lanes for more than an hour,

the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

A family from Broadview Heights, Ohio, was heading south on I-77 near U.S.

421 in Yadkin County when the driver, Christy Xavier Danius, 30, lost

control about 2:50 p.m., Trooper Daniel Moxley said.

Danius said he swerved to avoid hitting a car that merged in front of him,

Moxley said. Danius’ car rolled over, went over a cable median and landed

in the northbound lanes.

Danius did not have serious injuries, but his wife, Smalin Jenita, 23, and

sister, Leema Pillai, 34, were flown to Wake Forest University Baptist

Medical Center in Winston-Salem with critical injuries, Moxley said.

Danius’ parents were also injured, but their injuries were not

life-threatening, Moxley said. They were identified as Michael Xavier, 66,

and Chellam Xavier, 56.

Thats shocking! Hope they recover real soon.
Is there an indication that the driver (Danius) was at fault? Since its a merging lane,he ought to have moved over and given the other vehicle space to merge into the lane.
Eitherways, it would be tough to tell who was at fault.

Here's wishing the family a speedy recovery. God be with them.

I think he was at fault because he had the right of way. He should not have swerved. but it's difficult making judgments hen you are about to crash.

The merging vehicle shud have waited for him to pass.

Swerving at those speeds can be really dangerous... Especially if its an SUV/MUV. Sedans would probably hold on to the road better.

If this happened on a freeway, doesn't the merging lane have an equal right of way? Unless there's a 'YIELD' sign, the person can continue with caution. 98% of the time, vehicles move over to let the merging vehicle get onto the freeway. In this case,if the distance between your friend's car & the merging vechicle wasn't too much, a sudden response to swerve wouldn't have been the best of things to do.
Anyways, everyone reacts in different ways to these situations. Hope the injuries heal soon.

Update on this case

There has been some update on this case and the person in this news has been in some news papers here in the US 'Christy Danius'.

Seems like the wife was pushed out of the car by her husband and she slipped into coma back in August. She was flown back to India recently by her father.

More news here..I sincerely hope this was not a case and hope she recovers soon.

Wow, so its this guy. Man, its a small small world!
But then they say, you pay for your sins in this life only.

Have the mother and sister been buried or they lived?

oops, I was being sarcastic. meaning, the accident looked authentic to me. besides, If police doesn't, insurance gyus would send enough forensic experts and detectives to clear up any fog.

Rest of the story, I dunno.

PS: He is not my colleague anymore.

Thats quite a turn around in 3 months' time. Was he really a colleague of yours ? a lot of stuff comes out in the papers, it is wise not to associate ourselves with them.
