I Was out on an evening drive with my parents. On returning home, I spotted a Mahindra Thar with a small fire on its front bumper.
I immediately stopped and rushed to the spot.
The fire seemed to have just begun, the owner was right there, but was in complete shock and had frozen not knowing what to do.
My Dad, I and another good Samaritan biker rushed to the vehicle with bottles of water and a cloth to extinguish it.
Within 15-20 seconds we were able to extinguish the fire.
By then a crowd of about 100 people has gathered, with very few helping hands.
Unfortunately, none of the vehicles passing by, including mine, had a Fire Extinguisher.

The Thar did seem to have aftermarket headlamps, but I didn't stay long to inspect all that, had to rush home as I had some other work.
I will be ordering a portable fire extinguisher for my car ASAP.

This is a good thing to have in the car.
Especially in a hot climate and in dry conditions.
The FireStop ones are reasonably priced.
Ref the fire, there are lots of possibilities. Usually it is better not to mess about with the original electricals of the vehicle.

I agree as well that a Fire Extinguisher is a must have thing in our cars.
I was just wondering - in our hot climate in India, when we park our cars in the sun, the interiors are boiling after a while. Will such cylinders be safe and not blast inside the car ? I have seen many a times, If I had left an Aerosol bottle by mistake, after the car is left in the sun, there were only pieces of the can remaining.

It's better not to go with these ones on Amazon. We do not know if they are rated to be stored in a vehicle.
We have Fire Extinguishers in CNG vehicles which are safe to be stored in cars. Costs around ~900.

Fire extinguishers comply to a high safety standard and thus are more reliable than common aerosol spray cans. The bottle itself is hydrotested at 1.5 times rated pressure to ensure its integrity. You should opt for a CO2 fire extinguisher. C02 fire extinguisher will not leave any residue after use, is good for electrical fires and easy to operate. Just be careful about only grabbing the provided handle while fire fighting or you could get cold burns.
Very insightful thread, which made me check for some portable fire extinguishers, one such from a familiar name of
Ceasefire.

Good Job SRISRI_90:thumbs up,
I did not expect that a simple lights mod would harm the car, although I decided against it on my own somehow.
Will order a fire extinguisher soon
Cheers,

Had a long discussion with my accessory specialist the other day. He was of the view that accessory shops today are quite equal to the challenges and most of them use quality cables, relays and fuses. There could be some cutting corners but they ate the exception rather than the rule.
Many of these fires are set off by poor maintenance of the car, the costly -to-maintain cars getting ignored, and poor workmanship indeed. Of late a few German cars have gone up in smoke in Kerala. New cars are very rare when it comes to cars catching fire. Electrical short circuit might be a problem as well. And true to type, there is little information on how wires, harnesses and circuits hold ip in a car in the long run in India. Accessory shops are just a convenient way to waive responsibility away..
Fire extinguishers, although safe, can explode under odd circumstances. The one in our College’s Ambulance blasted back in 2012-13 and damaged the front windscreen.
Thars undergo a lot of electrical modifications, putting the. At higher risk of fire. I see most Thar in Delhi-NCR having illegal headlamp modifications blinding others. Hope the car of this owner will be back to its full glory.
As usual, everyone gathers for the drama but no one helps. Earlier I used to brush off this habit of not helping as everyone is way way too busy with surviving but then people gathering up to witness tragedies or big accidents and doing nothing completely contradicts that narrative that people are way too busy and stuck up in their own life.
Props to you for helping and preventing what could have been a big accident.
I feel bad for the owner I wonder what their reaction would've been after returning to find out that their thar was done medium rare, hope he gets it back to its full glory like someone else above said.
I don't mean to be standoffish or offend you in anyway, but how come your first reaction was to record the incident?

I agree, especially with the recent boom in EVs that have batteries that are not always equipped to handle the Indian climate which is becoming more extreme as time passes due to global warming.
