Yes it always does cost an arm and a leg at any manufacturer authorised workshop. Though I don't have a clue about the extent of your damage.

BA has a cashless facility, why isnt it being handed out to you?
There is no need to pay upfront when claiming insurance with them. Please check on this with the insurance people.
