Neighbour thought my car was his?! Demanded keys & driver

Hello All,

Vandals are on the rise and it is definitely hard to keep our valuables safe nowadays.I am sharing an incident which happened with my car a few months back.

I had cleaned and covered my car because I had no plans to go out anywhere for a couple of weeks which is what I usually do.

And someone from all the cars that are there in the parking lot decides to check out my car, he starts pulling the cover off the car to check the car number and at the same time he was speaking with someone over the phone.

Then he takes the cover completely off the car and throws it in the ground.

Later I came to know that he was asking for the car key and a chauffeur to drive him somewhere in my car.

Also puts the bag that he was carrying on top of the car and stands there for sometime checking his phone.

Luckily it started to rain , not sure if it was because of the rain or he noticed the camera, he decided to move away from the car leaving the bag on the car and did not bother to come back for it.

The housekeeping staff who came that way after some time spotted that the car cover was off and also saw the bag that was left on the car. She knows it is unusual and I would never do such things.

She removed the bag and also tried to put the car cover back.

The car cover on a normal day is really heavy and it takes me some time to put it on by myself.
And in this case, there was too much wind and she was not able to handle the cover.
I really appreciate her good gesture for trying and it's good that she did not put it on because the cover had picked up dirt inside which comes in contact with the car. She even tried to reach me to inform me that the cover is off from the car but was not able to do so because I was held up.

The rain really came down after that, messing up the car cover which was then lying on the ground.

Towards the evening when I came back home with my friends , I noticed that the cover was off and found the wet and dirty cover lying on the floor beside the car.

Took the cover home and let it dry in a room.
After realizing that there are things going on in the society , I felt that it is not safe to keep the car in the society as it is getting targeted for what it is. I decided to take the car and park it somewhere safe until things settle down.

After the cover dried, I was able to see the amount of dirt that it had picked up. The inside which comes in contact with the car was the most affected as you can see. It is the soft alcantara material and it took me hours to vacuum and remove the dirt from the cover. I had to make sure it is completely dust or dirt free before I decide to use it on the car next time.

After watching the video and knowing what the housekeeping staff had tried, I personally went to her and thanked her for what she did. She even asked me whether I need help in getting the car cover cleaned which I politely declined saying these are things I can handle myself.

From the experiences that I have had in the parking lot, I can easily say that it is becoming a huge challenge and a concern keeping our valuables safe from all the external factors nowadays. Fortunately nothing happened to the car this time. We cannot believe that would always be the case.
Whether it is in the parking or out on the road, we need to be prepared with whatever we can.
The dashcam for a car is a must have nowadays and a 360 degree surveillance in your parking is also a must.
Even when all these are there, these cannot prevent anything but at least gives an opportunity for you to figure out what had happened. Something is better than nothing.

So that is the second bitter experience I have had in the parking lot and I really wish this is the last. Anyway I have made up my mind to face anything that comes up next

Thank you all.

If this is a society with CCTV and all, why there's nobody on the gate to question this stranger if he's no where to be seen around and that too on broad day light

Yes, it's important to be vigilant these days.

I wonder how security allowed a stranger into the parking lot. Do you have a registration system at the entrance gate? Also, what was inside the bag that he left behind, or did the stranger come back to take it with him?

One more quick question: does anyone else in the society have the same car?

He checked the number so it is unlikely that this is a mix up.

Okay, so came to know that he is an owner of one of the flat in the society because of which the security did not question him. But he started causing trouble to the residents and started causing damage to private properties inside , that's when association had to take help from police to sort this out. Looks like he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol which impacted him mentally.

And no one has similar car in the society. So there is no confusion , he specifically asked for the keys to this car and a driver to take him somewhere.

This was a harrowing incident for sure. There should be some security guard seated next to the car parking or if none the society should consider hiring an additional personnel inside the premises to keep a lookout.

Weird. What was in the bag he left behind ? It seems while on the phone he passed on your car number and someone was checking details. Have you ever given your car for service to a non authorized center. FNG, or aggregator ? They are porous at times to get cars stolen, knowing details and being observant of vehicle patterns. Else just random curious John Doe. But I doubt that.

Is it the same parking and cars where a lady struggled to turn the car after multiple 'reverse + turn' attempts and finally scraped the BMW front?

That is scary to watch.

Which society is this? Is it in Chennai?

Yes, it is indeed the same parking, same cars. Was discussed at length at:

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/stree...ng-area-6.html (Neighbour crashes her car into my BMW 630d in the parking area)

@Rachet, this is second time car trouble with neighbours. On a lighter note looks like it's a classic "neighbour's envy owner's pride" case

@rachet: What was in the bag that he left behind? Did you file a police complaint? If not, why?

Off topic, is this the car wherein a celerio hit a bmw in an apartment parking lot like a couple of years ago?
