I asked the guy but he did not have clue except for "It takes photo of numberplate".
So if you have really bright headlights, they won't get your number plate right?
I think thats why they go away when sun goes down.

Yes LIDAR is Laser detection and world over Law enforcement is moving to Laser because
1. you can aim a target from 1km away and get the speed reading within seconds
2. Very advanced expensive detectors(as compared to RADAR detectors) so few people have them, and even those who have them get toasted before they react.

The disadvantage is that you need a vehicle or a mounting platform as handhold LIDAR is almost impossible.
You also need to aim at places like numberplates/headlights etc., where reflection can occur. Black cars are difficult to catch at night.

In the US radar is used, and the same cop gives you a chase.
A LIDAR is mostly used on fixed platform vehicle and is extremely difficult to use at night, but on a busy highway can be difficult to implment.
Moreover in the US only those people going well above the limit are stopped. In this case even people doing 93kmph were being stopped.
The police had erected a barricade and caused a small traffic jam, all for some revenue.

in the US they use Laser as well as Radar (how do i know.. personal experience using a V1 and a couple of my friends were state troopers)... and the same cop gives the chase ... and i have been ticked for doing 32 in a 30 Zone
More over the heaver laser speed guns are HISTORY...

Actually, speed guns alone wouldnt suffice. The drivers should be checked for alcohol. This act alone would make very much difference to the number of accidents.

Just a small point; somewhere it has been written that if you switch on your HLs or have a reflective surface on the number plate then this LIDAR can't 'see' you and hence the number can't be recorded.

It also has been mentioned that this LIDAR works at a distance of more than 1 Km. Now, in that case how does one get to know on which road the LIDAR is being used so that one could switch on the HLs well in time?

Wah GD Bhai !!! I did not know that switching the headlights would cause the LIDAR to not detect your number. Now that is what I call useful information.

BTW I am on the safer side - there are no interceptors on NH2 ( Agra - Delhi ), Speeds upto 150 are manageable here at many stretches. Why don't they keep any here ? I have read signs saying 90kph speed. That is good enough I feel !!

Haryana police has been doing this challaning business on and off. They caught me in Nov last.
Switching on headlights and driving is an eye opener. So anytime we see a car with headlights on in broad daylight, we can assume that it's a fellow bhpian.
I have tried another trick sucessfully but it is only if you manage to spot the police Sumo with the interceptor, when you cross it. I simply stopped around 100mts ahead of the police vehicle and took a decent break of around 15 mins. I drove catiously towards the barrier where they were stopping other defaulters and lo, they signaled me to pass through!

well thats pretty smart and i'm sure it will work unless you take a good break and let 2,3 same model/color cars to pass.
