Its just been frwded to me from India, this happpened on the way from Bangalore to Mangalore in a place called Nelyadi.
Two persons travelling in the indica died on the spot. The Tanker caught fire, people staying around 3kms have been told to vacate, since it might explode anytime. The fire fighters are also scraed to near ,since it might explode anytime.

Was the Indica trying to pass the truck ? Should they use water on oil fires ?

Water on oil fires can only be used to contain the spreading of the fires to other materials nearby. Wetness / dampness in the surrounding area will help in containing the spread of the fire. Water cannot extinguish oil fires. They will have to use foam / powder (i dont know what the actual name is) to extinguish the fire. If the filled tanker is burning and no action is taken to extinguish the fire, the explosion can cause severe damage. Hope the fire department will take action quickly.

It's LPG. And yes, guess that the foam type of retardant helps here.

It seems to be an LPG Tanker ! Ideally they should use DCP (Dry chemical Powder) or foam type Fire extinguisher, since LPG is lighter than water. Only good thing that could be brought about by spraying water is to cool the entire thing so that fire is put off.

Still confused how the accident would have taken place.

1. Both the vehicles are travelling in the same direction by seeing the picture.
2. How could the tanker turnover when they are driving at a very slow speed as it is ghat section and the tanker is loaded so he cannot speed at this time.

???

And if it is LPG or anything that would blow, the fire engine (and the firemen) would definitely face a pretty bad impact from where they are standing - either get the hell out of there, or fight that fire!!

I dont know for sure, just offering explanations of what could have happened
I think it was a head-on between the tanker and the Indica. You can see the front part of the Indica smashed. They may have been coming from opposite directions, collided, and then the Indica spun around. The tanker may have tried to avoid the Indica and gone off-road for a while, and in doing so become unstable where the actual tank portion got unhooked from the carrier and overturned and caught fire

Tractor.

They should contain the fire before it catches the tank. The Tank is made in such a way to resist heat or fires. If its only the diesel burning they can put it off immediately. But if they keep getting scared and waste time, ultimately the tank may burst. I probably think the fireman dont have this bit of information.

Really scary though. If it is a highway, just cant think of the mess.

The firefighters had to wait for the Lpg to get over to dose the fire.
Later cranes had to be used to lif and move the tanker aside. Now teh highway has been opened for the traffic.
