^^ Shaking does make a difference of at least 250 ml in my car.

I had situations were petrol was filled to the brim and few shakes definitely made a difference and gave space to close the lid.

My Getz CRDi takes ~8 liters of Diesel to get to brim from auto cut-off. The tank capacity is 45 liters, but I easily fill 45 liters when I already have ~5 - 7 liters in the tank (when the low fuel warning comes up). Incidentally, the auto-cutoff kicks in at ~38 liters, giving a fairly accurate tank capacity (38l for the cutoff + 7 in the tank after low fuel comes up = 45).

How much fuel still goes in depends on how fast the fuel is pumped in. As the air present in the tank rushes out on being filled, the fuel rises with the gases, the sensors in the pump stop it. Rocking the vehicle allows the fuel to settle down as the air is escaped from the tank.

Fuel tank capacity as mentioned by the manufacturer and filling it upto the brim are two different things. Manufacturer mentions only upto a certain level of the tank. Filling it up till the brim includes the hose upto the tank from the fuel lid.

My Bolero's mentioned tank capacity is 55 litres, I can fill 61 litres.

I think auto cut off also depends on the speed of your fill.
So if you fill up faster, the auto cut off will set in earlier.
And if slower you would be able to get more fuel in before auto cut off. I could be wrong though.

The capacity of the Splendor fuel tank is 10 litres, till the bottom of the filler neck. If I fill it at Shell immediately after hitting reserve, it will take exactly 10 litres to reach this mark.Till the brim, it will take ~ 500 ml more.

Whereas most PSU bunks manage to fill in > 11 litres in to the Splendor tank!

Our i20 also takes in nearly 5 litres of diesel after auto cutoff. Also there is no air vent provided beside the fuel nozzle inlet.Maybe this is the reason why so much air will be trapped inside the tank and consequently more fuel intake after cutoff and bit of dhakka!

My FIL's i20 took in 9 litres of petrol after auto cut off! That too twice till today from different petrol pumps (I normally stop after auto cut off). Is the auto cut off triggered when the tip of the nozzle touches the foam created when filling in?

My Scorpio used to take in about 2 litres more after cutoff - but then, I never used to over-fill it on account of evaporation loss.
In the Yeti, I simply go by the Auto cut-off itself.

My Optra petrol capacity is 60L, gets cut off @ 36 L or so and then goes to gulp 14 to 15 litres more that is 51 L. There is no way Optra will have 60L @ Auto cut off, then every time i fill up till brim, i must be holding 75 to 80 L. But what ever filled i get mileage of 11kmpl from brim to brim calculation.

My i20 diesel takes around 10 litres after the auto cut-off. After filling to the brim, the fuel indicator needle starts moving only after I travel 293 km.

My Civic taken in about 1.5 litres after auto cutoff
My Verna takes in about 3.5 litres after auto-cutoff

Anyone onwing i20 CRDI Sportz car here? I am little stunned here with respect to my i20 CRDI

The car's fuel tank capacity mentions 45 ltrs, I came across a surprise, when I fuelled my car FULL TANK to cap's brim levels (TOP UP), and the reading gave out 52 Ltrs. This was at BP Jayanagar in Bangalore.

This was surprising and thought the fuel station might have looted me and I just left with the bill. But, when the time came to fill up diesel full tank, same upto brim level at another BP station, this time in Bannerghatta Rd, Bangalore, again 50+ ltrs....This perplexed me. Since, I was driving down to Hyd, I wanted to check fuel efficiency and was in a hurry.

In Hyd, again when time came, i did full tank in HYD Jubilee Hills BP station (known for prompt fuel quality) again it filled 51+ ltrs upto BRIM level

Hence, I am very much confused.

PS: I do fuel the tank up when its almost empty.

My Dzire takes in around 1 litre after auto cutoff. Tank capacity is 43litres and the max that I have filled is 42 litres.

Chevrolet has stated the Spark's fuel tank capacity to be 38 litres but yesterday I went to a petrol pump and filled a bit more than 43 litres. Had 1.5-2 litres already in the car.
