Friends,

Yesterday was a bad day of sorts for me. First of all I stepped out
for work at 9 am when the "Rahukaal" period just started, though I
tried my level best to leave 5 mins early.. Secondly, didn't take the
Bull to work as a friend said he would pick me up in his Qualis and I
was a bit uncomfortable with all this and on top of it he handed over
the steering to me of a car that I hate with all my might.

Lastly, in the evening when I returned home and wanted to take my
family out, thought of taking the Safari but discovered that the fog
lamps were not working, the right HL's low-beam was not working and I
hate driving on hi-beam. So, switched to Scorpio to discover newspaper
shreds on the mat. This immediately alarmed me and I peered below the
dash to find a shredded newspaper page hanging.

Ganpati was probably upset with me and had sent his ride to teach me a
lesson.

Suspecting the worst, I cleaned up the mess, under a Maglite beam
superficially inspected wires under the dash for fraying and gingerly
switched on the ignition - lights came on and the engine fired at half
crank as it usually does. Idled for a minute and taxied out. A hoot
and the guard lifted the barrier and I moved out of the building. Just
20 mtrs ahead the engine sank and so did my heart. The vehicle stopped
a few meters away from my building (fortunately). There were no
ignition lights and the engine was cranking without firing. All
lights, power windows, horns etc., were perfectly working.

I got down with sleeves rolled up to inspect, opened the boot and checked the battery terminals and visual signs of rodent attack. All seemed to be ok. Now was the turn of the fuse box & relays. With a philip
screwdriver opened the fuse cover and shone the torch. Immediately
noticed that the fuse in the 2nd slot in the 1st bank that runs the
condensor fan was burnt along with the slot. But this shouldn't have
affected the ignition. Tried fixing another fuse but it wouldn't fit,
but somehow managed to hold it there and turned the key. No life..

Unfortunately I don't have the fuse puller in the fuse box. Does
anyone know from where & how to get another one?

With thick thumb & fingers it was an effort to pry it out. Somehow
managed to check all fuses and in the process bruised my left index
finger and found all of them to be ok. I hit a dead end. Couldn't find
any frayed or chewed wires. Got frustrated and called Race car
helpline. They said that would send the rescue car in half-an-hour
with a mechanic and I asked which car and they said Omni. I asked them
that suppose if it couldn't be repaired then how could he tow the
vehicle to my building with the Omni? Race said that Omni couldn't tow
a Scorpio and I told them not to send the rescue vehicle.

Then I called Rakesh my FNG. He told me to check this and that on
phone that I had already done. Rakesh said that he would send his guy
on Sunday morning although his workshop being in Old Gurgaon is closed
on Sundays. A ray of hope and a surge of relief. Now was the time for
the family to push the 2 tonner back to the building. It was a
breeze:eek: without the power steering and managed to park it neatly right
in front of the building gate with a strict instruction to the guards
to keep a watch on the Bull. I also told them that I would
periodically call on the intercom to check...he he he.

Slept fidgetingly and at one point around 3:45 am nearly picked the
intercom to check with the gate guards...! Got up on the dot at 5:30
as usual but with a start and after the morning abulations, rushed to
have a look at the Bull. There it was standing tall & imposing, though
wounded, in the dense fog. Inspected and came back and got ready for
work.

Sunday, and work; well something urgent, hence had to go. Left
in the Safari and at around 10:30 received a call from Rakesh that the
guy had left for my home.

Rajesh the electrician landed up at 11:15 and was met with Anshu, my
son. Rajesh spoke to me and was confidence personified and said that
he will start it in 10 minutes. Well, not exactly in 10 mins, but 45
mins later the most expected call from my son came. The Bull had
sprung to life and was being parked inside the building at its regular
slot. Rajesh confirmed the fears - rat had chewed-up the main supply
wire to the fuse box. Well, am relaxed and happy and on Monday the
Bull would go for a thorough electrical check-up as I don't want any
nasty surprises enroute to J'mer.

Will be shortly visiting the market to stockpile Mortein Rat-kill. Now
when all this settled down, I was wondering why this happened in the
first place and why me? Then it suddenly hit me. Roshun got grounded for
this J'mer trip - first by the gentle (read steely) negation by Sairee
and secondly something official. He must've cursed and real bad.
Probably he was the Rahu and I the victim.....:Frustrati

p.s: I must say Roshun was very magnanimous in offering his DesertFox to me for the J'mer trip..

Rat Kill ? Why not have packets of tobacco hanging ?

Gautam, could you explain.. What has tobacco got to do with rats?

Rats run away if you keep a packet of tobacco in the engine bay.

Damn they actually run away Viddy ? It's only a packet of tobacco not condoms :D

Oh guruji! :Shockked:
Another bad motoring day?

Nice to know that you managed to get stuck not very far from the house. Make sure you don't eat or leave any sweet particles inside the car for the attraction of rodents. And use some anti rat substances in the engine bay.

Wish you a rodent free ride ahead! ;)

You learn new things on TBHP everyday. Today we learnt that:
Tobacco in engine bay: rats run away
Condoms in engine bay: Viddy runs away.
Tobacco and Condoms in engine bay: Viddy runs away with the Rats.
:D

Nice write-up GD though bloody frustrating it must have been at 9.30 at night:Shockked:! Next time don't hesitate to give me a buzz.

Bloody rodents, now you've got me worried as well:eek:. By the way, do let me know what you manage to pick up by way of tow rope.

Good to know Bull is back to it's roar !! Haven't tried but how about using the tobacco packs as suggested and post feedback.

OT: Your watchman must had a bad time watching over the bull all the night !!

Thanks Suman for the offer and hope I don't have to take it up someday, lest it comes accompanied with a certain "simran" & orange juice. It indeed was frustrating but fortunately it was just a few meters away from my building. Tow-rope is a priority..

I'm planning to use the tobacco packs + naptha balls & will see its effectiveness. The watchman did have a tough time..:)
