Delhi-Leh-Delhi on bike in June 2009

Hi friends,

I am travelling from Delhi to Leh from 6th - 14th June 2009. We are 3 people on bikes. Leaving Delhi 3am on 6th June.

Since we are very tight on our schedules (aka, less leaves), here is our itenerary:

Day 1 (6th June): Delhi - Manali (~521km)- leaving around 3 a.m.
Day 2 (7th june): Manali - Sarchu (~250km) - try for this as far.
Day 3 (8th June): Sarchu – Leh (~226km)
Day 4 (9th June): Leh - Khardungla - Leh (~80 km)
Day 5 (10th June): Leh - Pangong Tso (~170km)
Day 6 (11th June): Pangong Tso - Leh (~235 km including M-La) (will try to make a run for Marsimek La before going back to Leh) )
Day 7 (12th June): Leh - Sarchu (~266 km)
Day 8 (13th June): Sarchu – Manali (~250 km)
Day 9 (14th June): Manali - Delhi (~521 km)

I know there are a lot of places to see in Leh itself (heck, time constraint). Will try to come back from Khardungla and then roam about. One of our contacts in Delhi have arranged for permits, so we need not worry about them. Anyone leaving around the same time may contact me.

Some of our concerns are:
1. Nick of time (cant do much about)
2. Punjab violence (anticipating for peace to settle in)
3. No buffer time in case of any problems enroute (snow, etc.)

However, we will try to cover all of these and come up with a travelogue.

Hi. Sounds a great trip and sure you will have a great time.
One very important suggestion however: dont rush on the first day in the mountains. We did it once- straight from manali to Sarchu and were knocked out- Accute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You can prevent it only if you are acclimatized to the gaining height which will be too quick for people like us living in the plains. The next time we spent a day going to Udaipur ( beyond Keylong) and then proceeded. Ideally one needs atleast two days to acclimatize. I might be driving through in august if all goes well otherwise to Chandrataal.
All the best.

Dearest Dost please .visit Royalenfeild. com site first and get full information about your trip it will be of great help. In Mumbai I have a freind his name is Mr. Prem he is a bullet specialist in mumbai and is the one who has gone to Leh from Mumbai on a Bullet all alone and he told me that bullet did not give him any problem exept near Delhi the float bush had given way he got the engine work done in Delhi and proceeded. Near Marsimek La he had breathing problem imagin a loner in a place and having breathing problem, he said that he became so weak that while riding he fell off from the bike and was not able to lift the bike to park it on its stand he stayed put in same situation for 2 hrs to regain from weakness. So guys be careful donot take high risks at high altitudes take small oxygen cylinders with you. What Bikes are you going on? Have sufficent fuel with you allways, carry some spares you never know you may need them, be close to each other allways. Best of luck

@ravikashyap: Thanks bro. Yes AMS is a concern. Maybe we will take it easy on 2nd day and then make the run on 3rd day to Leh itself. That will give us 1 night in Manali and the other enroute to acclimitaze.
August is a very good time to be there, and I envy you for Chandrataal. Thats next on my list. BTW, do post your travelogue. I am sure it would have been an amazing trip. How did you go - Bike or car?

@Iqbal-Veerji: Thanks for the concern. I have seen the site, and it is quit exhaustive. Would also recommend you to visit Yogesh Sarkar's blog on Welcome to Yogesh Sarkar's website. He is a fellow TBHPian and has done solo trip to Ladakh.

We have some contacts in army, and would be camping near them mostly. We are riding on Pulsar 150, 200 and Avenger.

A detailed travelogue will come as soon as I come back.

@phamilyman: This is one of the closest shots to the Saddle bag that I have. The bag is from Chopra's in Karol Bagh for 1200 bucks. Totally waterproof, ample space, and durable.

We subjected it to snow all night without covering, and in the morning none of the things in it had any problems. Definitely recommended.

BTW, the pic is of Moore plains.

Re: Delhi-Leh-Delhi on bike in June 2009

Hi Friends,

I am plannign a trip to Leh on 9th June 2012 and found this post useful. I want to keep alomost the same plan which is entioned in this post:

Day 1 : Delhi - Manali (~521km)- leaving around 3 a.m.
Day 2 : Manali - Sarchu (~250km) - try for this as far.
Day 3 : Sarchu – Leh (~226km)
Day 4 : Leh - Khardungla - Leh (~80 km)
Day 5 : Leh - Pangong Tso (~170km)
Day 6 : Pangong Tso - Leh (~235 km including M-La)
Day 7 : Leh - Sarchu (~266 km)
Day 8 : Sarchu – Manali (~250 km)
Day 9 : Manali - Delhi (~521 km)

I have some queries and need your help in this:

1. Any stay point a M-La or nearby ?
2. I am looking for good quality Saddle bag in delhi.
3. I am looking for 12v mobile charger in delhi (not expensive one).
4. Any good mechanic in Karolbag or anywhere in delhi to get bike check up since it already done 62+ K without any engine work far (bike is still good and I dont want to take chance and every one knows the job done by Bajaj service center)
