Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Age - 14
Vehicle - Jeep
Tutor - Uncle

My mom says , as a kid , all she needed to make me stop crying was to place me on the driving seat. By age 10 I was after my dad to teach me driving . But he being a by the rule IAF officer , simply asked me to wait for another 8 years. However at first chance when dad was away from home , I cajoled my Uncle and he relented...Without my parents knowledge I learned driving.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

As far as i remember i learnt car driving at the age of 17, by reversing the car from the garage to the main road, i learnt it by some oral tips from Dad and drove one round maybe 200 meters per day to get road sense, earlier to driving car i rode Java and perfect shifting gears.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

My first driving was in a Wagon R (Maruti Driving School)

My first driving alone was a TML 909 lorry (Inside company premises)

My first driving on road without instructor was Alto (My boss's car)

My first long distance driving was in VW polo (Chennai to Melmaruvathur and back). But it was quiet a first experience. Just try and drive alongside the Ford staff buses for the first time and you will know what i mean. In each and every mirror you will find nothing but Big buses.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Age - 12
Tuton - Dad
Car - 1982 Nissan Cedric 2.8L Diesel
Location - Noida (in front of the greenbelt, from the main Noida entrance, going towards Atta (near APJ School).

Didn't do much "driving", though. Stuck to second gear except where I changed down to first and stalled the car on a speed breaker Rolled back into the Gypsy that was behind. Dad had to go pacify the Gypsy fellow, and took over shortly after I managed it over the speed breaker.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Age: 22
tutor: George (a person from El Salvador from some driving school)
Car: Honda Civic 2007
Location: New Jersey, USA

Within days of landing in USA - I understood the hard fact that if you cannot drive, you may as well die in US without food. Took the shortest possible time (still 5 months - March to August) to get SSN, get learners permit, learn driving, wait for 3 months minimum time from getting the permit and get a real license.
Only required lessons for 6 hours, and passed road test in the first attempt.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Age: 17
How: Engage first gear, drive from the garage up to the gate, engage the reverse gear, reverse into the garage.
Mantra: Nothing can go wrong if you have the clutch depressed all the way down, right foot off the accelerator, and have the brake handy.
Car: 800
Story: Asked the driver a gazillion times to teach me how to drive. He just gave me gyaan and procrastinated.

I took the car to the streets a few days after this routine. Strangely, on the second such 'expedition,' my accompanied me and was one huge encouragement. Thank you Maa :")

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

age - 17 applied for provisional, had full license before 18th
how - by ten i was car mad, watching parents every move in their cars, asking questions, generally trying to learn, and driving them nuts. at 15 told dad i wanted a car, he said get a job, so i did, saved up for two years, went on a council funded taster session at 16. for proper lessons, had 8, and passed first time.
car: nissan sunny, a four speed underpowered rot box i couldn't wait to get the hell away from

story? which one? "borrowed" my fathers mint rare 1303 beetle for a drive round town at 15....borrowed mums very nice merc w123 at 16 for a drive round town...did the same to her volvo 264...

been on the road 23 years now, yes it's more a drudge now than then, but there are days, cold, dry, sunny, crisp mornings, the road is clear, the engine warms up just right, the controls feel good and the tunes are just so...

It looks like most Bandra Khar boys learn to drive that early ! I was vactioning summer holidays 6th standard that makes me as old as you only 9.5 -10 yrs old !! I learnt on the Left hand drive Toyota corolla because this was the only family car which wasn't used as a daily runabout for special ocassions you see in 1985 it was a considered to be IMPORTED GAADI .

Started taking car out at 5.00am for my first lessons. Roads used to be empty in Shastri Nagar and there was no fear of someone banging from behind even if the car stopped during gear changes.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

I have voted to the category 15-20 because there is no catagory less than that.

However I learnt driving at the age of 13. My grandfather taught me to drive.

The car was Maruti 800 oldest version i.e., 1984 model. I learnt driving at my hometown Shorapur on the by pass road which in those days had very less traffic.
