My Santro is not modified, tyres are stock too. As you go to Pune from Mumbai. as soon as you pass the first Kamshet tunnel, the road starts sloping downwards. So I start speeding after Kamshet 1, and by the time I am at the end of Kamshet 2 (about 1 km later) I am already at 145-150 kmph. After Kamshet 2 there is a long sloping stretch of about 2 kms, and my Santo gets close to 160 kmph about 1 km into that stretch -- it doesn't exceed 160, probably due to wind resistance. On level ground my Santro's top speed varies from 135 kmph (on rough roads) to about 150 kmph (on very smooth roads). Even wind assistance, tyre pressures and the load in your car, will play a part. I keep my tyre pressures at 33 psi, my car is not loaded (I am alone on these drives) and I switch off my AC for hitting top speed in this stretch. Also I remove the (thick) rubber mat from below my feet for these long drives, as it keeps moving and getting entangled in my feet. So the throttle goes down by that much more -- don't know if this plays a role too.

I would like to warn newbies not to try this as overspeeding on the Expressway can be very dangerous. On a previous trip at night, I found a lorry broken down in the left lane, which I was using for passing slow traffic in the middle/right lanes. There were NO warning lights or signals and I saw this stopped lorry in my path, using my high beam, with not too much time or distance to spare; I was at about 140 kmph.

And one more point -- if your car is Xing, it may actually be faster in fourth gear. I think a T-BHPian (Fuelled?) mentioned that he exceeded 160 kmph in 4th gear on level ground in Xing. I took my ZipDrive to 160 kmph in 5th gear -- I generally don't flog the car in 4th gear to speeds above 80-90 kmph on highways (50 kmph in city driving) because I don't want to spoil the engine. But my ZipDrive can probably do 120-130 in 4th gear.

I do know that the Xing is faster than my ZipDrive. I have overtaken several Xings during my Mumbai-Pune runs, but on one occasion a Xing guy did make a determined challenge when I went past him at 140 kmph near the entry to the Expressway. Initially he just disappeared from my rear view mirror, but I saw him steadily catching up with me some 33 kms later, near the entry toll gate (after which he stopped at the restaraunt). My guess is that he initially was in 5th gear, but shifted to 4th to catch up with me -- my vehicle does slow down on even mild upward stretches in 5th gear, and I didn't shift to 4th for the purpose of racing this guy. I have also heard that the newer Santros with E-III and more stringent pollution control may actually be slower than my E-II ZipDrive -- but I don't really believe this.

147 ....126....203....You seem to be too accurate , do you have a GPRS onboard . It doesnt hurt much to round of to 5

I did a 80-85 in my old passion(it couldnt go faster) . a 100 in my brother-in-law's rx100. havent driven cars at much spped. But did 70kmph on an ambie on my 2nd day of driving lessons. My driving instructor was furious.

As a passenger in my colleague's ford ikon, touched around 150 in a race between another colleague's remodelled tata sierra. That was very scary as the road was very narrow and had hairpin turns at regular intervals.

My fastest

That would be a mustang at 120 mph (approx 192 kmph)- it was a V6 and i floored the accelerator and held on praying there were no cops - one of those back of beyond places in the desert in Arizona
But the greatest thrill was the cadillac at 100 mph - bumper to bumper on the interstate in california - like everyone was playing russian roulette - someone brakes and everybody loses

Hmmm, pretty old thread!
After 160+ on indica long time back which I posted, since then I have done 165kmph speedo indicated on Getz.
Highest true accurate speed measured by me while I was driving is 120kmph(GPS) on Indica.
and 120(MPH) = 193kmph true speed(GPS again) while sitting as front passenger in a Sonata V6 in the US
