Comm Street looking much better now. Also, that Westside has solved the parking issues as well 👍🏽

Like church street, this too should be made vehicle free, albeit on all days, limiting vehicle movement to 10 PM - 8 AM. Give the shoppers a good time/space and they'll spend.

I think it'll be easier to make Comm St. vehicle free rather than Church St. There are quite a few residential buildings on Church St. and it's hard for the residents on vehicle-free days.

While vehicle-free days are a great plan eventually, once the public transport and last-mile connectivity issues are solved, for now just good footpaths in Bangalore will be a blessing! That means footpaths where vehicles aren't parked (forget motorbikes riding on them!), without shops and signage encroaching, no street vendors setting up shop, no broken drains and without garbage, construction material, and BBMP digging all over the place!

That would be a great start.

Why not put in place a system of retractable bollards and issue residents on that street with id cards or codes to retract them? This allows legitimate users access while keeping the stretch car-free otherwise. This is a solved problem guys.

Because even low-tech solution implementation (exceptions being in controlled settings like offices or metro stations) fails in the face of jugaad/crooked contractors who always get PWD contracts and non-compliant public users. The simpler and more idiot-proof a solution, the better/longer it lasts on our roads.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Had to drive on ORR last Friday. With metro work starting, the 2 lanes for non-buses has become 1.5 lane in some stretches. But still it is fairly a non stoppage drive on ORR, since all tech parks are closed.

Update on ORR bus lane:

If we were not work from home and the tech parks were open, the ORR would be India's largest parking lot.

Utter waste of taxpayers money. Knowing fully well that metro work will start on ORR within the year, they still went ahead and wasted crores of money on the bus lane. Worse part is nobody is answerable to the public as to why money was allowed to be spent on bus lane when the city's roads are in worse condition.

Really deplorable.

Agree, they should have gone for Bus and Bicycle lane where metro was already completed. Its waste of money.

But this money would not have gone to roads in other places, as its spent by DULT not BBMP. Its important to build sustainable transport like bus-lane or Bicycle lane or foot-path not just roads.

They should have planned in other roads where no work was planned and wide enough.

BRTS, Bus lane has never worked in any city. Pune built BRTS like a metro. It is unused for years and has taken half the road. It's not even broken down to allow smoother traffic flow.

There are equal number of cities where BRTS has worked very well Bogota in Columbia, Curitiba in Brazil, Brisbane. In India Hubli-Dharwad, Ahmedabad, Indore, etc.

Its just that success lies in implementation.

Exactly. The Hubli Dharwad BRTS is dedicated bus corridor in the centre with flyovers only for buses and bus stops in the centre of the road. Buses have opening on right side and the traffic flows on the either side.

The same implementation didn't work in Pune. Hubli Dharwad has much lesser population and far less IT parks like what we have on the outer ring road.

Now with Metro coming Bus lane makes even lesser sense! Public transport itself isnt going to be as popular owing to the pandemic so having a bus lane + metro is counter productive. Ofcourse long term future Metro makes a lot more sense.

Even Hubli Dharwad had lots of issues with BRTS:

https://www.thehindu.com/news/nation...le33398090.ece

I had heard from people I know that they were unhappy with implementation and car movement slowed down a lot vs before with BRTS.

As you can see Metro is the way forward not temporary jugaad like bus lane:

Infractions: 0/1 (7)
Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

This is the way civic infrastructure in our country is developed :
1. A committee is setup, where PWD minister, secretary are the big boys, and some jobless retired/semi-retired ex govt officials, prominent industrial scions from the city (for adding credibility to the committee, they are never involved other than tweeting on twitter or to appear on behalf of the committee in TV channel debates) are the members.
2. Rent, cars, food and accommodation for the above, for many days over a 6 month period.
3. Some laddu-jilebi report gets submitted, saying - we need winch system deployed in swiss alps, or the tram system deployed in san fransisco (the calcutta one is useless), or the double decker buses from london, or the bullet train from japan or the cycle usage in Netherlands.
4. Next the report is made "actionable" after a few more rounds of (2).
5. Then PWD minister, his family, his wife's family, his second and third wife's family, PWD principal secretary (but only his immediate family due to non ministerial rank) , and some other bootlicker underlings from the ministry (they are only allowed to travel alone, ie without family) go on a tax-payer sponsored first-class cabin 5-star 7D/8N trip to Japan or San Fransisco or continental Europe, to "study the solution more closely" by face-to-face interaction with "experts" in those countries.
6. Return and hold a press conference to announce that the study-tour was very productive
7. After 3 years of (6) happening, invite tenders/contracts for implementation of the monstrosity that has been decided. This will open up a 7(a), 7(b), 7(c) etc involving the intricate workings of the govt - civil contractor "engineering nexus" which I don't want to discuss here.

So this is how "namma bengaluru" and many other big cities in india have developed their infrastructure to "global standards".
