Very true.

Railway line underpass is slightly better compared to Legacy Apartment/Vidyashilp Academy Underpass after Sparsh Hospital. Water logging happens only because of the Metro debris.

One more alternate story which I heard from many people staying in Old Yelahanka. Kendriya Vihar was built on the Lake itself and not on the lake bed as many people say it is. There was an bund kind of walking path going into Yelahanka Old town where left side was the Yelahanka Lake and right side was a smaller lake where Alakapuri Hotel is situated. The overflow from small lake flows into Yelahanka lake. Interestingly, as soon you a take right turn at Kogilu Cross, there used to be another lake, where currently some exhibitions are held. There is a Rajakaluve next to it,which we can see has been converted to a sewage drain now. So,3 lakes within 200m of each other which held so much water disappears and this has to end up somewhere

Really kudos to Traffic Police who work around with all these challenges to make traffic flow as smooth as possible.

On an unrelated note: Water which has so much force to wash away cars/bikes on the road was helpless against few leaves in one of the apartment visitor parking areas. As soon as the leaves were removed from the drain holes, water escaped silently

There was this image on social media on how valleys between lakes are now housing huge buildings as below.

This is the story of most lakes. The connecting raja kaluves are turned into narrow drains which cannot carry lake overflow.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

This is Rainbow drive today afternoon, a layout on Sarjapur rd, opposite Wipro that was submerged during 2022 flooding. And they have done significant re-work during the last year on the drainage system but it is still under water. This sits right on the lake path from Halanayakanahalli lake to Saul Kere lake. No amount of rework would solve it looks like. A lake is a lake.

Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation-img_9184.jpeg

Lots of posh houses inside, not sure what’s their fate now. I could also see tractors deployed on the opposite side of this to get people out from some layout. What a sad situation, you go home in a car and the next day need to rely on a tractor for rescue. Really feel sad for the people affected due to this ridiculous state of infrastructure.

This Rainbow Drive is a layout whose builders have blatantly flouted the lay of the land and the natural topography. Same as Epsilon. And the authorities that gave the permissions to build are equally culpable.

However, it is always the owners and residents that bear the brunt of all this venal profiteering behaviour.

Saying that, most folks who buy property and land in Bangalore are highly educated people. Yet none of them ever seem to study the geography and topography before buying.

If you consider the case of Challaghatta and KGA and Yemalur and Epsilon etc, all of those areas lie right in the path of the water course from the higher ground of town towards the erstwhile fields of Marathahalli and the Lakes of Varthur. Anyone who has driven on those roads can see the natural slopes and contours.

But then, everyone sees, but doesn't notice.
Incidentally, even the largest portion of HSR especially from Sector 4,5,6,7 and all, were once completely comprised of swampy wetlands.

Similarly the other side of the Agara Lake where the Ayyappan Temple is, was a large swamp where buffaloes used to graze even up until the early 2000’s. Now there are two or three large apartment complexes being built there. Agara Lake itself was around 4-5 times its present size in the 1990’s.

ST Bed, where lots of Apartments are, was reclaimed from Swamps and was a Tank Bed even in the early 2000’s. Where presently the entire Sobha Floral named housing complexes and DNR etc is, abutting Iblur and the Outer Ring Road, was a lovely lake in which there used to be coracles and fishermen. All this has been steadily eroded and deteriorated and been built upon.

There will come a day (very probably) when everything will open up into a vast sinkhole and disappear.

ORR is standstill. There is no movement literally for the past half hour or so. Pathetic.

Rainbow Drive is now like the Pirates in Asterix comics. Any decent rain fall, they are the victims. 6 years ago they even had made a video on Rainbow Drive with a special focus on - Rainwater harvesting!! No way the residents would have imagined that they would now be taking rain water harvesting to the extremes!..

I remember riding my scooter on that road in early 2000s, and it was a pretty desolate stretch. The Ayyappa temple was a very small temple, with the priests from Kerala only. The lake too was not very clean, and with no walkways etc. The only large human dwellings in the area from Ayyappa temple to today's Sarjapur Road Jn on ORR were two military detachments camps (one from ASC and another from CMP). I have heard that (and it could be rumours) that the area where lots of Sobha Apartments are, and the area behind it all the way till HAL airport were also used as Artillery firing range. The firing practise had to move else where when Sobha and their backers decided to build apartments there.

Here are a few pictures of that swamp behind the Ayyappan Temple from Jan or Feb 2004. As you can see I was not exaggerating when I talked of the Buffaloes. It was a place I used to take my dogs to play and go and muddy up my Gypsy too in those days.

And yes, that area was used as an artillery firing range by the Army. The spaces you allude to are a part of the ASC and CMP and known as Iblur Camp.

It stretches across a pretty vast area all around behind HSR and near Haralur and all. And on the other side all the way from the said Ayyappan Temple contiguously upto the Inner Ring Road and beyond.

It is the Army who gave the land for the Inner Ring Road and even Wind Tunnel Road. And of course for 27th Main Road in HSR to become connected to Somasundrapalya and all.

But that of course, is another story…

Have been looking for this sort of picture for so long. Thanks for posting it!

There is a saying in Kannada - "kere neeru kerege chalbeku" - meaning lake water has to get back to the lake. and how so! The "outskirt" badly designed areas of Bengaluru is where the worst is happening - Kendriya Vihar in Yelahanka, Epsilon near Yemaluru, Rainbow Drive near Sarjapura, Hebbala, and some low lying areas near South Bengaluru where they encroached on the Vrushabhavati SWD and promptly paid the price.

What happened to all of Bengaluru's lakes?

Well, they just got transmogrified.

It is frightful. The steady killing of Bangalore’s lovely lakes by successive governments and the BDA and BBMP and the Real Estate-Builder nexus and their combined unbridled greed.

Re-posting the old photo of Bellandoor. Just because it is nice to remember times gone by.

In the Desert lands of the Middle East they are greening the sands.

In the Green and lush lands of Bangalore, KA, IN, they are creating a steady devastation which will become a poisoned desert land.

And many of us are condemned to live in it, literally Cast Into the Outer Darkness, where there be Wailing and Gnashing of the Teeth.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

They say nature strikes back. Its claiming its place back. I think for lot many years the rains were not heavy consistently and water would drain out over some time.

I used to look back from Prestige tech park towards Bellandur lake while visiting one our vendors there and see the low lying area between it and the lake. I actually wished we could have heavy rains not letting up for days to show what they have done. There were only few luxury bungalows back then.

Its not just the lake. Even if you do not encroach the lake, the farm fields would be almost at same level as the bed of the lake or even lower sometimes to hold on to water for crops like paddy etc. These should have been classified as buffers and forested instead of converting to residential areas. Now imagine the lake beds raised due to silt and garbage.

In rural areas (some of which are now part of the city), there is some land called kharab land which is land adjoining streams or hills which is not allowed to be cultivated. Its used as buffer for water and for grazing. All such lands have also been converted to residential areas. Tata has constructed its apartment complex on such land in Hosakerehalli !

On local news they have been using all sorts of harsh language against the authorities. Looks like water over rock for them.

.
Hosa - kere - halli.

New - Lake - Village.

(Though I did not earlier connect the dots - with Hosa as the same as ‘Wosa’ as the pronunciation of ‘New’ in Kannada.)

Anyway, the Name says it all.

In the olden times, people had common sense and lived ‘with’ the land and nature. In modern times, we are going against nature and it will simply bite us back sooner or later.

I think we must be along a ways, in the Kalki Avataaram as per mythology and the World as we know it, with the ‘Rise of the Machines’ will some time or other, be ended by the ‘Rising of the Water’.

Left at 3:10 pm yesterday from RMZ Infinity. Took 3hrs 45min to reach home near bellandur junction. Roads weren't flooded. This traffic jam was result of potholes and total Infrastructure collapse.

Totally agree. I have seen them filling potholes many a times to ease traffic situation other than managing traffic. Even yesterday, they were relentlessly managing clogged junction tirelessly .
