I think the journalist got a bit carried away.Bsk 2nd stage was not on a lake. Bsk 2nd stage ends where Kadirenahalli lake starts. But now,the lake is replaced with tall apartments(I think the name is Shalini apts).

Also, there was no lake in Tyagarajanagar. There was a lake nearby called Chenammana Kere, which is now Chennammana kere achukattu. There is not even an inch where houses are not constructed.

Murugeshpalya lake was infamous for nightly activities as there was acres of empty defence land beyond that. As soon as the defence guys built a compound wall, the lake encroachment started from the other side.

In addition to lakes, there were lot of wells(less than 50 feet from ground level) in Bangalore that used to get recharged during copious rains. I have personally seen water gushing into wells at various house in Mathikere, Malleswaram, Kathriguppe. This was a other factor that helped recharge water table and avoid floods

Well, not everyone.

I know, this might be another planet as far as we're concerned. But the same people who taught the ways of the 'modern world' to India will soon have a thing or two to say about ancient wisdom too.

How tragic, that we seem to be permanently stuck behind the curve. If there is any consolation, politicians everywhere seem to think alike .

Around 6 or 7 years back, the Halanayakanahalli lake behind Rainbow Drive was almost dry and dead. Ground water level dipped alarmingly in that area. There were protests and call for action to revive the lake. Authorities acted to revive the lake by unblocking and cleaning inflow channels into the lake. But the outflow channels to Saul kere was beyond repair. Layouts like Rainbow drive, Sunny brooks and I think even Wipro campus encroaching. The water sinking swamplands around the whole area around Saul kere and Bellandur were gone.

With the inflow restored, lake filled up, significantly improving the ground water level in the area.

Then, when heavy rains happened in 2022, the lack of outflow channels showed up, flooding the entire area. Now, history repeats, even with a much lesser volume of rain.It ain't ending any soon.

If you look at the map, you can see, it was a continuous stretch of military land all the way from Army Public School Agaram(near Trinity circle) all the way till Somasundara palaya in (now) HSR. The inner ring road and outer ring road at Agara - Ibblur (the old Sarjapur road) runs across the military land. Also the HAL Old airport road from Domlur to Marathalli is on HAL land and I think is still owned by HAL.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

It is absolutely pouring down in and around HSR.

To call it a torrential rain would be an understatement. Prayers for all those who ventured to the office today towards ORR. If possible, leave as early as you can. If this rain continues even for an hour, it is going to get inundated.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

It's been a mini monsoon in Bangalore over the past week, with some of those darker-than-usual afternoons that usually show up in June happening again in October! I heard the rain gauge even overflowed after reaching 222 mm. Despite that, most of the city seems to be doing alright, though some familiar trouble spots—like Sarjapur Road, the ORR underpass, Manyata, and Yelahanka’s CPWD area—have been affected. Stay safe.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

What next?

Eventually the rains will subside, the land will dry, the skies will be bright again and the saga continues...

New areas will be formed without planning, encroachments will continue to happen, the blame game never ends and the story keeps on repeating year after year.

I just cant fathom the more misery some of the key projects would bring along with it; metro expansion everywhere, new airport, new peripheral road and development around it and many more...

and please, this isn't the plight of Bengaluru alone!

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Let us not be taken in by fake news and false headlines. Colonialists and neo-imperial capitalists are responsible for this mess (did I miss anyone?). Colonialists did not want Bangalore to grow beyond the “pete” area and prosper. Neo-imperial capitalists did not like the threat posed by Bengaluru’s emergence as an IT power. Political leaders, administrators, officials, developers and citizens are blameless (did I miss anyone?).

You missed the "petit bourgeois" (the IT/ITES middle class) who also came out in large numbers in their private vehicles, choking the roads and thus helping colonialists, and neo-imperial capitalists in their nefarious plans.

While your moot point is spot on, your data point is incorrect.

All three parties are responsible for this mess (across India, not just Bangalore).

Govt has a duty to plan properly and provide better infra and transport facilities, govt departments (mostly locals) have a duty to adhere to and do their job correctly. Just remember the most recent fall of the under-construction building leading to death of workers in Bangalore. Required precautions, approvals were thrown out of the window I suppose.

General public has the right to demand better infra and safe transport facilities. Do they do so? Do they vote accordingly? Do they participate in the cleanliness of the city? They are more worried about the appreciation of their property bought with loans/EMIs than anything else.

General public using cars is just a workaround when you don't have safe and comfortable public transport. Just as they buy SUVs instead of Sedans just to be able to drive on bad roads.

They could ask for what they deserve, but they are happy to circumvent this duty with spending more money. In such a case, what will an opportunist do anyways?

Hearing reports of massive traffic pile up on E-City flyover. What is happening to our city?

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

How you systematically damage a great city and why the issue is restricted to newly developed areas of Bangalore. The below Google earth image will give you clues.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pr...oASAFQAw%3D%3D

You can see that the entire downstream path of Varthur lake is encroached by Prestige for 3 mega projects. How these projects got approved? Why no objections from anyone? The 3BHK units already sold out in Raintree Park. People know Bellandur lake and Varthur lake are connected and the overflow from Varthur lake flow towards Kolar via the the channel clearly visible in the map. This is going to be fully encroached for a concrete jungle.
