It's definitely the roads. I had to take a right under the Residency Rd floyver towards Shantinagar, and it's pretty much a camel ride. This isn't some obscure suburb, it's the middle of town!

Took me nearly a half hour to cross the Kalinga Rd signal - Mission Rd - Residency Rd floyver stretch this afternoon (barely a km)

Just to know, why you are not allowed to take this ORR->Airport route?

The commuters coming from K R Puram and Nagavara to reach the Bangalore International Airport must take alternate roads like a right turn at Hennur junction and along the Hennur-Bagalur main road or a right turn at Nagavara junction, to go on the Thannisandra main road.

Thanks for the update. Most news wires and even traffic police tweets had mentioned the diversions a few weeks back. Didnt realise they haven't been implemented yet. Will take the usual route and leave the adventures for another day..

Bang on! Definitely this is one of the major factors. An example I can think of is Mysore road entry from the highway to the city. Coming from the BME, you are immediately slowed down by moon like craters from the NICE junction all the way till the ORR junction. The difference is so stark that you can actually see where NHAI jurisdiction ends and where BBMP jurisdiction starts.
Similarly, major / arterial / minor roads across the city are in absolute tatters.

The only somewhat smooth piece of tarmac I can think of is Hosur road starting from Bommanhalli towards EC (even that is maintained by NHAI AFAIK).

Add to this the brazen rule breaking, massive AR / NL registered buses rowdily operating during peak hours, BTP only caring about catching out of state 4 wheelers & merrily clicking photos of 2 wheelers violating traffic norms (obviously all yellow boards are given a free pass) and you have the current situation.

I completely agree. The roads are in terrible condition everywhere. Just yesterday, my friend and I drove from Hebbal to Kanakapura Road. The 4 km stretch from the bike garage to Gorguntepalya signal took over an hour. The road was almost non-existent, with it being dug up and filled with gravel and mud. Add to that the dust, traffic, and reckless drivers cutting in from all sides, and it was a nightmare.

I can’t help but wonder where all our hard-earned tax money is going. It seems like it’s being spent by government on securing vote bank through endless free schemes for people who barely pay taxes. I also have a gripe with cement roads—they're fine when they're smooth, but any bump or pothole can cause a spine-jarring impact for bikers if you're not careful. Not to mention the endless mounds of garbage displays as modern art installations all across the city. Oh lord save my city

While I could drive my car, I feel guilty driving alone and taking up road space. So, I stick to my bike, but that means inhaling a lot of smoke and dust every time I commute through our garden city’s roads.

Yes, this is purely a rant with no solutions for the traffic problem

Exactly what each day's commute leads me to think. Unlivable for most parts The other day I had to leave for a trip at 4PM. I live in Whitefield, as I was packing my bags, I realized that I could do with an extra pair of trousers. So at 2.30.pm, I thought I would dash to Decathlon Mahadevapura and pick up one and would take me about an hour at max for the 8 km roundtrip. Alas, I was horribly wrong, I was stuck at the road in front of Gopalan school for 45 minutes wrestling with school buses, wrong side riders, vehicles avoiding digging work etc. It took me a cool 3 - 3.5 hours to get back home (despite taking an auto both ways). The other day, I had to take my granny to the hospital and back. 100 kms of city driving took a mind-numbing 9 hours inside the city. It's atrocious how many hours and precious energy is wasted, and across so many people.

I have nil technical knowledge about road engineering, but long term, cement roads ( both for highways and city roads ) might mean less ongoing repair works? Also, is it cheaper and even an option to have a thin layer of tar on top of cement roads, will the tar hold up well? That way we can have the best of both roads and any tar layer peeling off could be repaired at a much lower cost. Not sure.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

I do not live at Bangalore, but drive there often. Got a couple of scares from the new speed cameras at Bangalore today:

1. I drove from Dobbaspet to airport, and did not notice the speed signs and cameras for a few kilometers. I am sure I would have been in the 100-110 range during that time. Set cruise control at 95kmph once I noticed the cameras, but it might have been too late. Are the speed cameras on STRR active and are challans being issued for data from them?

2. On the stretch from airport to Hebbal, I was well within 80kmph (mainly staying in line with the speed of regular traffic). Then, at one place, there was a sudden slow-down in traffic, and I quickly overtook, seeing space on one of the lanes, only to see a speed warning sign showing me at 90kmph, and then realized (too late??) that everyone was perhaps slowing down because of a speed camera.

Wondering how much I will end up paying. :-( BTW, how do I check for challans issued at these places? Is it the Parivahan eChallan site itself? If yes, how much time does it take to show up? (For the record, I have been driving quite a bit and have never had a challan issued for a long time - my record on Parivahan is also clean).

Don't know about the status of those speed traps but I check for fines issued in Bengaluru on the btp website page.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Noticed that 4 massive new speed bumps have come up on the inner ring road between Ejipura signal and the Domlur flyover (in the Koramangala-Indiranagar direction). Couple of them also serve as pedestrian crossings with concrete interlocking blocks on the top and asphalted ramps on either side. Watch out for these, lest you end up with a broken suspension!

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

<Rant>
The other day near Kundanhalli, turning towards Hoodi from Varthur side on crossing the green signal due to pathetic way the junction is setup couldnt cross completely (was behind newbie driver that got stuck too in front) and suddenly the traffic from opposite side started.(was not blocking)

What i noticed is a traffic police comes and starts taking pics. No sure where the vehicles behind me went or maybe they reversed back in time.

Now i need to see if i get fined or not.Can someone share the link to checks the fine again please that doesnt need mobile no.

</rant>

Thank you for not being a single person car driver. Every time I see them I ask myself why can't we all just ride bicycles. The average speed my bike is the same as a bicycle. We have the weather to support it and a young population who are into fitness. If we could just make it safer for cyclists...

Hate this so much. Saw this today. The whole reason why this section has many crashes and needs speed breakers is because the white topped road is of terrible quality and designed badly. Zero feel, the concrete is so bumpy that if the suspension is not setup exactly for rider weight it worsens the traction problem and rumble strips on turns upset scooter suspension with skinny tyres and small wheels so bad. This exact section feels so much better the moment the white topped section ends (towards koramangala side) even when it is bumpier. At least the new trapezium speed breakers are placed before the turn instead of on the turn like the old rumble strips.

Why do they need speed breakers there when there is an elevated pedestrian crossing near ultraviolette showroom. This is so stupid

Another disastrous road (if you can call it that!) is Kensington road beside Ulsoor lake. There are innumerable craters all the way to the MEG junction circle, horrendous experience navigating this stretch. My mind switched off today and I forgot to take Gangadhara Chetty road on the other side of the lake, ending up enduring the pain of Kensington road twice in 4 hours
Pathetic condition of roads in and around Bangalore, time the government and BBMP wake up!
