I'm not a wannabe-cop, but I'm really fed up with one particular traffic violation - bikes riding on the footpath! I see this happening almost every day when I walk to and from Metro stations. These idiots also honk to get pedestrians out of the way while they brazenly ride on the footpath! I've gotten in to a few confrontations, without any serious consequences, but I don't want to risk that anymore. I'm thinking I can easily take a photo of the bike(s) and the license plate with my phone and upload it. Hoping it works, and the fine/penalty reaches the offender.
I use the public eye app, use it to channel my rage against one way offenders. I feel BTP is not very responsive once in a week they resolve on ticket and keep many open. When i cross verify if the resolved ticket really resulted in a fine, it doesn't show up as a violation.

Conclusion: It doesnt work..

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

I travel lot around Jeevanbima Nagar, New Thippasandra, Indiranagar, Malleshpalya, Kaggadasapura areas. In the last 6 months, there has been an alarming increase in the number of 2, 3 and 4 wheelers driving after dusk without their headlamps on. Combined with blinding white lights from other motorists, its difficult to spot these imbeciles on 'Batmobiles'.

Is this a thing all over Bangalore now? Or is it particular to the above localities?

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Brazen lawlessness in New Bangalore (or GazaStrip of Bengaluru) has crossed almost all limits. The mayham caused by Two wheel riders can only be witnessed.

Drive in every and any possible direction, driving slow on absolute middle of road, taking high risks to save that milli second, blocking traffic on opposite side (quite common in Kadubeesanahalli, Gear school road, Pennathur), the list is endless.

Worst part is - there is no police to be seen, absolutely no intention from any admin body to control this pathetic behavior on roads.

Don't know where will this end, god save this (once beautiful) city!

Just to clarify, the last confrontation I had with an idiot riding on the footpath was near the JP Nagar Metro station. Since I've lived in the city all my life and can speak Kannada, he couldn't really intimidate me, and backed off the footpath when I refused to move out of his way and started questioning him. He was bullying an old lady before that, honking to get her out of his way...on the footpath! Idiot!

So I really don't think it's got anything to do with an 'old' or 'new' Bangalore. Bangalore is Bangalore, all areas under BBMP limits deserve better. And bad traffic, breaking rules, rants are prevalent in all localities.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

One problem which is accentuated a bit more in newer areas of Bangalore compared to the older ones is that, the overall infrastructure is very poor. No planned alternative roads, lots of unscientific junctions and even policing is very less. Until recently Hennur road was under Banaswadi traffic police. They at least 10kms apart. And BBMP is still BMP in my opinion and there is no Bruhat(newer areas brought under corporation 15years back) in their plans. Funds allocation is lopsided, all new vanity projects are still in the CBD or some political strong holds.

Sorry for ranting, but this is a thread for ranting.

There is a related news today on the unplanned development and how govt is bring a bureaucratic process to contain this. However noble is this step, we all know where this is heading to. Iam so pessimistic on govt initiatives.

BBMP tightens Khata rules as approval now mandatory for property registrations.

Revenue minister Krishna Byre Gowda expressed concerns that such unplanned and unauthorized constructions have led to urban planning challenges including, flooding and traffic congestion.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Instead of making such stupid rules ( that no one follows or enforces ), all this needed is to step out of their offices and visit just a couple of streets every day.

The BDA can rake in crores by putting fines on almost every commercial building and multistorey houses for every violation in the books - be it FAR, offset, parking, etc etc.

This is obviously happening. Its not that the babus are unknowingly unaware / stupid / blind. I blame Gandhiji for making it happen so.

It cannot be India if its not happening . Thats why I put they can "collect fines" and not "settle" the violations.

Got to see this video from AIM.

An interview with AIM, Vandana Nair interviews M.N. Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru Traffic, to explore how AI tools such as ASTRAM, and ePath are transforming urban mobility.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Just had this video pop up on my YouTube feed. (Video is in Kannada)

Summary: Apparently, BBMP is planning a flyover from Banashankari to NICE Road atop Pipeline Road. If this comes to fruition, then it will be a relief to all those who live and commute along the Kanakapura Road corridor. The 10km flyover will have 5 entry/exit points.

Still begs the question - since there is the Metro on this stretch, why is there still so much traffic congestion?

Two reasons I can think of:

1. Limited Metro connectivity. The Green line doesnt help those who are travelling to Ecity, ORR and Hebbal. Once yellow, blue and pink lines becomes operational, the ridership should increase.

2. Last mile connectivity. I have said this before as well. Unless the last mile connectivity is sorted using feeder buses and metered autos ( thats an oxymoron in Bangalore ), people will continue with personal transport.

Because no Metro system can/will eliminate road traffic. All it can do is give those who choose to use it, an alternative. Enough people will always want to/need to use vehicles, on the same stretches covered by the Metro.

From a city planner point of view, a Metro moves far more people than the same length of road. So, if reducing traffic congestion is the goal, measures to disincentivize private transport (congestion charges, banning parking on stretches covered by the Metro, widening footpaths at the cost of road width, etc.) need to go hand-in-hand with the Metro system.

A general response:

1. Last mile connectivity. I can drive to a station & park my car to take the metro, but on the destination side, connectivity can still be a problem

2. Metro at least currently is not suitable for Multi-point trips

3. I will save time for the part where I take the metro, but can still end up taking more time for the trip as a whole

4. Luggage - when carrying stuff, Metro may not be an option. (Beyond the suitcase)

5. Rains.

6. Parking space at Metro stations.

On a smaller note - Metro is good as long as one does not have to switch lines today at Majestic.

*

On another note, I sometimes take BMTC instead of the metro.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Does anybody know what is the work they're doing all along the periphery of Kadubeesanahalli service roads and interior roads, since December ? The demarcation boards say KTPCL which is Karnataka power transmission, but don't know what the work is about, or when it will end.

They've dug up one side of the road, and filling it up temporarily with soil, topping up with gravel. Because of the rains today, saw 2 Jeep Compasses getting their tyres stuck in a deep ditch formed in the dug-up side. Passers-by and good samaritans had to push the vehicles to extricate them. Please be careful if you are traversing these roads since the rain has essentially softened the soil, and ditches can be quite deep.
