I was referring to the case of dumping trash by people who stay in the same neighborhood. And this is an area where there is garbage collection at the doorstep every alternate day! Anyway, anything more on trash will be off topic. But the same case applies to traffic. Yes the major blame is on the greedy governments we have had (irrespective of political party) for traffic and other infra relates issues in Bangalore. But we contribute to that as well with our thoughtlessness and shortsightedness. And the consequences of this behavior are already coming back to bite us (right now, not in some distant future).

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Dear All,

I have to drive to Mysuru from Tirupati tomorrow. Will water logging create any issues anywhere? Google-map is giving me a reasonable estimate of 7 plus hours, not much change from days without water-logging.

Thank you very much for the help and input.

I drove last year to Tirupati from Bangalore in heavy rains which lasted from Kolar till Tirupati. There was no major water logging on the highway. You might face some standing water in Bangalore city, but didn't see major issues on Bangalore-Mysore expressway in the rains last week.
keep an eye out for underpasses in Bangalore city, rest should be fine.

The phase of heavy thunderstorm rains is now over as monsoon onset is starting. So no major rains expected in the South Interior Karnataka Region in the next few days. You should not encounter any flooding or waterlogging anywhere.

no issues whatsoever on Karnataka side. And AP side too must be OK as it has rained lesser there.

Well, I am not sure about this. Its a behavioral issue that is deeply embedded consciously and unconsciously. For example, people throwing orange peels, banana peel and other trash out of a moving car whilst they could have retained it with them till they reached their destination and then discarded appropriately. More importantly, everyone need to have a sense of pride towards their nation and an innate responsibility to keep their surroundings clean. Karnataka and other laggard states can learn from Kerala for example where I haven't spotted a single instance of garbage on public streets. It begs the question how are they managing and could they teach others?

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

One of the best pieces of advice I received is to stay close to my office premises. This helps as one will go to work five days a week versus staying two days at home on the weekends.

Additionally, if I have to rush home due to an emergency or the other way around(head to the office on a day I decided to work from home), I am assured it wont take much time in the traffic. Covid changed that a bit for two years, but things are back to normal now.

But being in Bangalore for over two decades hasnt had its own share of woes with getting stuck in traffic, underpasses being water-logged, heading back on after being stuck in traffic for half an hour a kilometer from home, the garbage woes, and so on.

Both the administration and the citizens are to blame for what Bangalore currently is and will be going forward. The share or percentage of blame can be debated though.

This hits the nail on the head, it is not about dustbins or schedules for picking trash, it is about the mindset of the people. I had recently visited the US and did a lot of cycling on trails that were designed for just cycling and walking. Almost 150 km of trails and I didnt find a single piece of trash or plastic anywhere along the route. I think there is an element of maintenance where the cleaning happens regularly, but more importantly, no one actually throws, they take it with them and dispose off at the end of their walk/ride. The area is full of Indians, so its not like we cant do it.

It is definitely a behavior issue irrespective of where they come from or what they do for a living. The biggest menace on Bangalore roads are the food carts operating for almost 15 hours. Their customers come from all classes of society, and these cart vendors are able to dispose of the trash in any nearby vacant land. I went to KRS two weeks ago, and these people have not spared KRS either. The first problem is the government giving permits to operate food carts inside Brindavan, and the second problem is people throwing trash directly into the river. I just inquired with the staff about how they clean the garbage; they mentioned that every week they clear the garbage inside Brindavan. For the past few years now, people have been accustomed only to eating lots of junk on the streets and throwing leftover food either into the drains or on the road itself.

This is what happens when 3rd tier of governance is in motion along with relentless citizen participation.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Namma Metro's Yellow Line delayed again, won't open before July-end
I am reminded of a Malayalam saying "ഗണപതി കല്ല്യാണം, നാളെ നാളെ..."*. (Lord Ganesha's wedding, always tomorrow & tomorrow; i.e ever delayed). This time the delay is blamed on the Seimens Signalling system and its test data sets. Looks like no body is really serious on any time lines, if the regualar payouts, salaries etc come on time.

Off thread topic. Hearsay and wikipedia/youtube knowledge. Japan, one of the cleanest countries in the world do not keep public trash cans. People carry the trash with them and use the trash cans at their hotels, residences or Convenience stores.

We inherently lack civic sense, need to drive it hard to work.

This is too big of any ask. Every 100 Meters you will have either overflowing or underutilized bins but trash on the road next to the bin in such a case. Most of the bins available in public places end up being used wrongly.

I am happy that I don't see bins every 100Meters or even 1Km. Otherwise during monsoon, we will have garbage floating on the road.

In general, I have noticed people just throwing trash next to the bin despite the bin being empty. For us in urban settings, we believe everything should be taken care of by the Municipal authorities/workers. And they think they are doing us a favor since no one else wants to do this cleanup work. It is lack of accountability and ownership which creates problems.

Does anyone know what this device does? There a few like this around Tin factory and on the KR Puram hanging bridge.
