Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Bangalorean members of Team BHP, please join us all on Saturday morning and support this event ! CFB seeks an early introduction of a convenient local train network in and around Bangalore, especially the traffic hotspots such as Hebbal, ITPL, Whitefield, International airport, & CBD(similar to the one in Mumbai). This could be the Ultimate victory , when we wish to see an end to Rants on the traffic situation someday!

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

The efficient use of available tracks is something which even I used to think a lot about. But later also realised these tracks are a part of mainline traffic. Its not that easy to interlace a city rail traffic with mainline out going traffic. (inter-city/ inter-state)

But yes some sections can be bolstered. Example the Hosur line can surely be used to route traffic to KR Puram/Hebbal/ITPL. (Thinking Aloud: Have a station near Samsung for example)

By the way, is Eagleton still open? They had a case earlier on encroaching government land to build their golf course.

I think they had to part with some land. For the remaining, they had to pay a huge sum of penalty

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Folks
I have something to suggest. Let the authorities develop heelalige station near chandapura as a major transit point
Reason being local trains from hosur pass through this station. By making this station a major transit point all E City users working in whitefield and marathahalli can board at this station.
From baiyappanahalli the local train can be made to go to bangarpet via whitefield
I would say there are options available provided the govt is firm on local rail network

Citizens Turn Up From Across The City To Press For Robust Public Transport System

Bengaluru: At 8.30am on Saturday, the Cantonment Railway Station was abuzz with students, teachers, homemakers and senior citizens, who had gathered to make a strong case for the suburban rail network in the city , which would go a long way in easing Bengaluru's traffic woes. The diverse crowd united under the `Chuku Buku Beku' campaign organised by the Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) group.

"PROFESSIONALS WANT TO SAVE TIME"

Niranjan TS, a resident of Sahakarnagar and Aditya Kumar from Rajajingar, complained that it took them between 90 minutes to two hours to go to Whitefield, where they work. A suburban rail system would, besides reducing travel time, also redress the imbalance in the work-life cycle, they said.A founding member of Whitefield Rising, Nitya Ramakrishna said that a robust commuter rail network would save money and time, not just for residents of Whitefield, but for citizens across the city.“Whether it's a software professional, a maid or anybody who has to come to Whitefield, suburban rail will save time and money for all of us,“ she said"

The problem with this plan is that the railways will not agree to a train reversal at Baiyappanahalli because it will disrupt the mainline traffic significantly. So there needs to be either a grade separator (like Bandra) or bypass (like Basin Bridge). Don't think there is space available for either.

With DMU and EMU's, there is no reversal as such. Just that the guard and driver has to swap cabins which doesn't take long.
After Hoodi halt was opened, there are two local trains that run up to BYPL and return by doing this. The platform line is blocked for around 15 minutes.
Not much of a hassle.

Had been thinking about this for a while. Wonder if there is feasibility for a Marathahalli Halt station right under the Marathahalli bridge. There seems to be enough space for a small platform at least on one side. This will enable walkable access to both Old Airport Road and Outer Ring Road. Today there is only one station on the Belandur- KR Puram Stretch and that is the Belandur station on Panathur Road. This is still a couple of km from the Ring Road and hence the last mile connectivity issue remains.

Since it is a huge commercial and residential pocket, one more station at Marathahalli can provide a lot of benefit in my opinion.

There is one more advantage of having Heelalige as a major transit point. We can have trains bound to chennai being parked at Heelalige. Presently the only route to chennai by rail is via K R Puram, Whitefield, Malur and Bangarapet. The missing link is the railway track between Hosur and Malur. Reason being all trains going from Bangalore city to Chennai central pass through Malur.
So by having a railway track between Hosur and Malur (which should be very much feasible) we can have trains originating at Baiyappanahalli and going via Hosur before joining the main line. With this bulk of the population staying at and near E City will stop going to Bangalore city station.
We can shift the origin point of some of the chennai bound trains from City station to Baiyappanahalli.
Let us all give a serious thought to this proposal.

The issue isn't reversal. The issue is crossing over the up track to reach the Hosur line, from Byappanahalli station.

This will happen sooner or later. I remember reading about a proposal to create a terminal at the old Bypl freight yard which is now used for parking few passenger rakes ,something similar to what Yeshwantpur is now. This is on the line between Bypl and Banasawadi stations. If you Google map it, you can actually see the size of the area.

Honestly, it is not too much of a delay to add another train doing that. There are just a handful of trains in the day that cut across to climb the ramp to Hosur and it is not that it delays any train by doing so.
Bangalore has still not reached a status where there are trains running every few minutes. The average movement at BYPL, which is the busiest section in Bangalore area , at peak hours is just one in ten minutes and the gap varies from few minutes to half hour between trains in both directions.
Having said this, railways may not introduce a train from the Hosur line to reverse and go towards Bangarpet .They will probably expect passengers to alight at BYPL on the existing trains that arrive from Hosur and get on another local towards Whitefield.

Fog in Bangalore. Almost makes it seem like the idyllic Bangalore of the 1970s.
