Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Something unusual at Marathahalli today. I just spoke to my daughter and she says she's stuck at that place for nearly an hour, on her way to Whitefield from Old Airport Road.

Any idea what could be causing the bottleneck?

The only thing happening today is a green corridor being arranged for heart transport from BGS hospital to airport at 9am. But that should not effect traffic near whitefield.

Heard on Radio that, there is an accident near Marathahalli hence the congestion. Traffic is almost at a standstill.

In other news, came to Whitefield today and there is a Volvo bus breakdown on the ramp which connects to Tin factory coming from Hebbal.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Has anyone observed the beautification of the outer ring road from Hebbal towards Yeswantpur? I was happy to see that some money is also being invested in beautification. Only later it struck to me that this is all for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Only the stretch on which people would travel from the airport to the venue is been beautified. Its so amazing that there is money for all this when the politicians need it. Let the delegates come to whitefield and see the sorry state of medians and footpaths.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Looks like land acquisition going on in full swing in EPIP area for Metro phase 2. The walls of many companies are being broken down. Wipro GE, Ginger hotel, Container corporation to name few. For next few years expect total mayhem in this area.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

After a gap of about 4 years i had the misfortune of driving around Bangalore for a week during the pre-Xmas period. The areas i visited included the infamous ORR, Old Madras Road, Sarjapur Rd, Whitefield etc.

As we were visiting and drove around in our own car, we planned to meet up with a friend at her office on ORR. We estimated about an hour to cover a distance of about 12-15 kms, but ended up spending over 2.5 hours to get there. Reason for the delay? Nothing in particular. Just the usual madness on the roads.

In another instance, our plan to meet a relative for lunch ended up becoming a dinner event all thanks to the cascading delays. One after the other, the traffic was a nightmare. Mind you, this is after spending more than 7 years here, and calling it home.

Thankfully, i was driving my 10 year old Ikon, which bore its fair share of scratches and nicks from Blr traffic, so wasnt all the more worried when cars around me closed in as if i didnt exist! Our car which was parked on the service road of ORR was scraped on the rear side by a Cisco duty Innova, while i was seated inside the car! Moron didnt bother to even stop.

Total callousness and lack of concern highlighted our experience on the roads. That aside, it was a great trip to be able to catch up with a lot of friends and relatives.

These days, if I plan for any event in the city limits I just plan for one event/meeting/social gathering. Till around 12 years back attending 1-2 events and then reaching back home was quite okay. Not any more. Out side the city limits (which essentially means outside the ORR, Nice Roads) then perhaps can still club 1-2 events/meetings.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Since yesterday, there's unusually high traffic pile up from Mahadevapura bridge up to EMC2 & beyond for over 1.5 Km. Reason is simple, the traffic police allow the vehicles from opposite direction to take U turn at Bagmane & this causes a stand freeze for all vehicles rushing from Mahadevapura. Traffic has piled up so much that people aren't even able to walk on the corner of service roads

It's almost a daily occurrence on that stretch. At any given point of time, it takes about 20-30 minutes to cross the bridge ever since some smart chaps at the traffic department decided to open the median and install traffic lights there. You should see the fun at night, after 10:30pm when the traffic lights are switched off. Everyone from every available wrong directions are trying to take a turn and eventually cause a gridlock which sometimes comes all the way upto the HAL police station on one side and Kundanahalli gate signal on the other side. I commute on this road daily and for me, this isn't unusual.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Prepare for some gridlocks and traffic jams from January 6-9 , 2017 when VIPs criss cross Bangalore during Pravasi Divas celebrations, especially on Tumkur road/NH4. Nelamangala toll may be shut for few hours.Avoid.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Half of Goraguntepalya road overbridge set to open for traffic tomorrow
Two-way traffic will be allowed on the RoB, only one ramp of which is complete. SWR is expected to ready the second ramp soon.
...
The commute from BEL Circle on ORR to Goraguntepalya now takes about an hour. The RoB is expected to make travelling on this stretch a breeze and reduce congestion at Goraguntepalya by over 50%.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Lane Discipline or lame discipline?
Why don't people follow Lane discipline here? Buses, Trucks, Slow-moving Commercial vehicles and even 2 wheelers are all on the fast lane. Many a time, the bus or truck would have broken down causing a bottle neck unnecessarily.

Lack of Patience... NO Patience
The other day, I was in line to cross the railway crossing behind Brigade. As soon as the crossing opened, people just crossed from both sides leaving me no option but to wait. The 2 wheelers go from one side to the other, while the on-coming vehicles cut in from wrong side, and even from their side. The mistake I made was I let 1 2 wheeler pass and by then one commercial rickshaw driver got his nose (but I want to mean a$$) in front and everyone just followed him leaving.
I have now adopted the "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" policy.
How does everyone tackle this kind of a situation ??

The F1 drivers on the roads
Changing of lanes during a turning. People do it so effortlessly without even looking in the rear-view mirrors! How cool is that? None at all!

I have written to Bangalore Traffic Police many times to first raise awareness about lane discipline and then, more importantly, severely penalize the violators. They did do something marginally on the awareness front but since there is no enforcement or penal action for violation, no one takes it seriously. Request everyone to join me in flooding their mailboxes with such requests that they get frustrated and take action!!

Aargh!

Well, to quote
We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do. – Mahatma Gandhi

The change starts with us. Not trying to be really preachy or something, but I have not used the horn-pad on my cars since 2010, that's almost 6+ years now.
I do get enraged/upset etc from time to time, we are but human, and have done silly things like rolling the window down, staring down, hand gestures etc, but, with a few seconds of interaction, can I really teach anyone on the road how to drive?
Not that I am a certified trainer per se that they would listen to me!
The change must happen at grassroot level. We cannot fix the problem like instant coffee. The current crop of bad drivers will only learn when they are outnumbered by good drivers. For that, we need good trainers.
In today's world, training starts from childhood. If the parents drive rash/angry, thats what the children learn.
The next step would be the training schools where we need more rigor. The last step belongs to the authorities for proper planning and law & order implementation.
In my view, in the 80-s, people had better road manners than today. So, basically, its the bad manners of the 80/90s which has spoiled the thing we see today on road. It will take another 15-20 years to get things back into shape and the onus is on you and me

Love your attitude!

But there are better ways to make people behave the way we want them to - "Behavioural Economics" should point the way. Basically, work with human nature and nudge them towards good behaviour. The problem is those responsible for doing this are surreptitiously using psychology to make a mess of what is already bad for their own purposes.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Heavy traffic on ORR from Silk Board side. There was a big truck carrying a huge payload near Ecospace. I believe it might have caused the traffic to back up.
