Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

BDA put this document out yesterday. Though the press (TOI where I saw this) claims this is a master plan, to me it looks like an information compendium that will be used in preparing the master plan.

http://www.bdabangalore.org/RMP2031_...0170104_R1.pdf

The traffic-related fun starts in page 15. Prior to that, the only interesting bit is the assumption that population of Bangalore will be about 2 crores in 2031.

As someone on Twitter commented, Bangalore has no shortage of visionaries. But where are the people capable of executing these grandiose visions?

They are unable to get basics right - like lane markings. Hardly any road in Bangalore has lane markings, leading to a situation where everybody is on their own imaginary lane.

I blame BDA for the current traffic gridlock, for poor planning. They have build roads without bus-bays, loading bays ensuring everything stops on the road when a bus stops. There are very few marked parking spaces in the city.

There are no road markings. A person unfamiliar with roads is forced to halt by the side to ask for directions, thereby inconveniencing the traffic behind him.

They have built ring roads without walk bridges for pedestrians. Sure, they will implement their plan but as per 3rd world standard.

Colleagues in my office have spotted lot of nails on Bellandur Fly Over. Couple of riders also reported punctures due to nails

Please be careful.

This looks to be some kind of mafia. Earlier a similar case existed somewhere near Iblur on the ORR

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

For those who take the Kasturi Nagar - Byapanahalli - Old Madras Road (OMR) - Indiranagar route like i do, there may be a nasty surprise in store. i observed a small poster put up by the Bangalore Traffic Police at the Old Madras Road U turn which read that the "Suddaguntepalya U turn will be shut down shortly and motorists will have to take the Big Bazar U turn"

Regulars on this route will recall how the entrance to OMR from Byapanahalli was shut down and traffic was routed to go the opposite way upto the Byapanahalli Metro station from where a U turn was allowed on OMR towards Indiranagar. This routing added almost 1.5 kms but temporarily eased the gridlock at Byapanahalli. Lately the gridlocks (especially peak hours)have reappeared on OMR.

I am at pains to understand the logic behind shifting this U turn a kilometer further down the road if that is indeed the plan. Does anyone have any other information regarding this move?

Rant: Looks like there is no over night (or parking for more than a day) parking at Bangalore Railway Station. Is this true?

I feel this might be a good move for the following reasons:
  • There is no signal at the current U-turn next to Metro station leading to confusion
  • This junction is already crowded due to the Metro station and a bus stop
  • The Big Bazaar junction has a signal
  • The Big Bazaar junction is wider in comparison; taking U Turn might be easier here
I only hope they restrict vehicles from forming multiple lanes for taking U-Turn. They should just allow the right-most lane to take U-Turn.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Agree completely with you on all the points.
Presently, many 2 wheelers dont go all the way to Suddaguntepalya to take the U-turn to go towards Indiranagar/Halasuru. They ride in the wrong direction and merge into left lane somewhere near Suranjandas road junction. Now, after this move, I expect almost all 2-wheelers to do this wrong side driving. There is no way they are going to go till Big Bazaar signal and wait for green to take the U-turn.

I am pretty sure the complete opposite of this ideal scenario is going to happen. There will be only one lane available for the vehicles moving straight. Not only will the vehicles taking U-turns block those moving straight, they will also not leave enough space for vehicles turning right from the small lane on the side of Big Bazaar.

This removing of intersections and expecting people to travel a kilometre is definitely not going to work in Bangalore. 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and some cabbies are going to move in the wrong direction and defy the rule.

I was once a regular user of the metro. They removed the U-turn towards the metro which totally put me off. Yesterday I had to go near Cubbon park but I still used my car. I need to do all kinds of circus to get to the Byappanahalli metro station as there are no u-turns to get there.

I for one disagree. All they are doing is shifting the problem further up the road. At this rate the Einstein's that thought this up will soon have you making a 'U' turn in Madras !!!

The signal will actually cause even more of a bottleneck with number of vehicles entering and exiting Varthur Road. I should know, I live down that road and even without the proposed 'U' turn it's a nightmare.

One option is to park your car at SV Road metro station and board the metro there.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Cessna business park entry from ORR is opened now ,now no need to take service road just pass the underpass and take left turn to enter Cessna business park.Only one way you can't enter while going out of campus. Some relief .
