Just what is required to be done n a situation like this. There is no point talking sense to them, because if they had one, they wouldn't have honked in the first place. whenever i see such morons and if we make a eye contact, I give them a broad smile. I am sure that will either confuse them or frustrate them even more and both cases, I am least impacted.

Yes that was the only thing that angered me in the morning. I drive daily, and just give way to anyone and everyone. But, today when my child was startled in fear and clutched hold of my shirt tightly, I just lost my cool and thought I had to tell him off. Who knows, he might just be a nice chap after all, having a bad morning too.

Anyway, I came home and read a bunch of Trump news stories to amuse me and put things in perspective that anything can happen!

Kind regards,
Kiran

What the hell was traffic pile up today between Agara flyover till Marathahalli. Initially thought of some breakdown causing the pile up. But after the drive couldn't conclude any reason. The usual traffic was there but only conclusion I can make is BMTC buses stopping as they wish, long routes private buses driving in swing (cutting every one across)and stopping whereever they want. Took 1.5 hours from Agara flyover down ramp till Marathalli bridge flyover

To a large extent our city/country planning is also responsible for this. I have recently visited four cities in China and found that they have dedicated two wheeler lanes, in most cases physically separated from the four wheeler lanes. Bengaluru with very high numbers of two wheeler should have something similar.

We have number of excuses for not doing the right things, and even in 2017 we are not even thinking about it

IMHO manual/auto just results in the ease of operations. Expecting better driving with a manual is futile, as the auto transmission is still a tiny minority, and I don't see the majority driving in a way which can be considered sensible...

Yesterday night I was surprised to see two police escort vehicles with blue beacons bull dozing their way through traffic on old airport road. Didn't the state government pass an order to remove these beacons or do these fall under the emergency vehicle category?

Only the red beacon light was banned. Blue beacon is the colour for emergency response vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) and is still allowed provided they are responding in an emergency.

The Central Govt. notification is that blue or red beacons have to be removed from all vehicles. Vehicles which are kind of "emergency responders" (police, fire & ambulance) are to have "light bars" which would have a combination of blue, white & red lamps. Such light bars can be seen in the new Hoysala patrol vehicles.

As for police officials, they can only have the light bar provided that the official may have to attend emergency duties. So a police inspector who is the SHO for a law and order or traffic police station can have it, where as a police inspector from Vigilance or CB CID may not have it.

I doubt traffic will reduce because of the metro.

The majority of people who will commute by metro will be the ones who will switch from BMTC buses, not personal vehicles.

On the other hand,
1. Because of the highly visible infrastructural improvement there will be more people slowly migrating to these areas.

2. Due to increased accessibility, people will do "unnecessary" random trips - For e.g people from Jayanagar going to mall in Malleswaram or Rajajinagar - which they otherwise wouldn't do.

3. Metro does not solve short trips use-cases like going to nearby supermarket, bank, hospital etc.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

KR Puram: High time they do something concrete about the perennial traffic gridlock all around and under that horribly designed suspension bridge.

Either demolish the suspension bridge and build a proper flyover catering to all the criss-crossing roads with underpass for the railway station passengers.

OR

Build a link flyover to connect the currently disjoint outer ring road so that NH4 and the ring road traffic is seperated without converging under the bridge.

I was taking 4 pretty young things for a party on a farm outside KR Puram, it took 40 min to cross that junction on a saturday night at 11.30 PM. Dropped them and the return run into town was only 20 min

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Last Friday, this was the state at NICE toll booth,Electronics City.

Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation-img20170609wa0042.jpeg

When I joined into this mayhem, I was here where I clicked this pic. I was curiously checking how bad things will be if the progress was slow as it was 0545pm, and to my expectation the jam did extend and started blocking the EC Phase 1 Signal. You can notice the gridlock at the entry ramp in the screenshot below.

Then I noticed Traffic cops arrive on a bike from the wrong side and sensed that they would now ask the toll staff to open the gates and they did.

Although NICE authorities are doing their bit by construction additional toll booths by expanding the road here, I doubt if this can solve the problem.

They are not just additional toll booths. They'll connect it to the bridge which was unused before. This will mean that people entering EC will no longer need to touch Hosur road and that'll reduce a lot of traffic near the EC gate 1 and on the entry ramp. For this to finish, they need to vacate a few small houses and hotels and puncture shops. they have already vacated and razed a few and some more are remaining.

What the public and commuters think:

  • Either demolish the suspension bridge
  • Build a proper flyover catering to all the criss-crossing roads with underpass for the railway station passengers.
  • Build a link flyover
What our government authorities think:
  • Build a Metro Station bang in the middle of all this mess. That will sort out traffic in 2050, by when there wont be any living IT soul willing to work in Whitefield. Look at the metro alignment below: They did not bother to keep the station out of the road but planted it right in the middle of the junction where all the mess happens.
  • If thats not enough, two pairs of metro tracks should now cross the road from the Ramamurthy Nagar side to the other side of the road one pair heading towards ITPL and the other to Silk Board. This will mean that the entire area will be dotted with pillars all over, and during casting of these pillars I guess the whole junction will be barricaded.

Its quite annoying here at all odd times. One way to move faster is to stick to the right most lane when going towards KR Puram. There will be all sorts of vehicles parked on the left lane of the carriageway and that effectively leaves one lane for vehicles to move. Every other moment, one parked bus/lorry decides to move and cuts across to the right. By the time this bus accelerates up the carriageway, there will be a never ending pile up behind.

Thanks Hemant, I am aware of this set-up. May be I should have been more clear on what I was trying to say.

As of today itself, during peak hours, NICE makes the Exit booths as Entry booths with just 2-3 booths left for exit.

So what I was trying to say is that with this set-up, there will be more windows that will cater to those entering NICE from EC and hence reduce the snarls which are seen in the evenings.
