If you wish to take stock of the situation, just visit any toll plaza - a tag holder will not be able to make it out of the toll gates any faster than those who want to pay cash. The cash payers consist not only of those who we imagine to be anti-social but also those who we consider bigwigs, and even those we consider worthy of respect. I suspect that the day we are able to fly past the toll plaza without human intervention, we will also be able to catch traffic offenders without policemen.
The NHAI tolls are getting Fastaged. So that day is not far off and within a few months (a day if the Jan 15 deadline is stuck to by MORTH)

Yes, the beauty of the design is that there are 4 legal ways to enter the junction along with 2 supposedly one-ways through which vehicles enter brazenly right in front of the cops. And each of these 6 can exit the junction through 6 different ways. So, the signal mechanism is not so simple, especially in a country where there is no culture of lane discipline or right of way.

I have a theory on how it can be done.

First, shoot the idiot who designed the two separate flyovers with two single lanes in the center.

Construct some elaborate barricading, traffic islands, etc to channel the flow.

Then comes the signals and finally a minimum of 8 cops at the 8 entry points to ensure people stop at the signals.
Of course, the cops shouldn't be given control of the signal. Else, they will allow the traffic from one side and go for a chai break completely forgetting that there are vehicles getting piled up on all other sides

To add to it is the digging that has been done in the service roads and covered haphazardly. Makes it even more frustrating when you see 2 wheelers and even cars come in the wrong way and occupy the only good part of the road and forcing those who are in the right direction to go over the potholes.

The one good thing has been the opening up of the service road just ahead of the new Oracle office. Those commuting to Oracle/ PTP from Bellandur side no longer need to take the service road before the Panathur bridge

You know what, I often taken this above-the-underpass route while heading home from Bellandur towards M'halli in the evening instead of the underpass. Sometimes it's way faster to cross through this than the dark underpass (aka cave). After all we are all self-manged on the road.

This might sound naive but can citizens like us help the government implement lane driving like we have abroad? The government doesn’t seem to be even trying.

Not naive at all, it's great that people are asking. We're all a part of the traffic problem and we should aim to become a part of the solution. There is already the Bangalore traffic warden initiative: http://www.bcptwo.com/

This would need clear lane markings all over the city. Lane cutting would be restricted but traffic would flow more smoothly.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

An important development in the suburban rail space. The development of the Airport Halt Station is nearing completion. Close to the KIAL boundary and ~3km from the Terminal. Being funded by KIAL and they intend to run shuttle buses from the station.

Would take time to ramp up as the frequency will be low to start off. But more than the flyers, immediate beneficiaries will be the airport workers who struggle to commute to and fro from the airport.

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has already declared its intention to operate shuttle buses between the Halt Station and the passenger / cargo terminals.

Airport employees, both regular and daily wagers, are expected to be the immediate beneficiaries of the halt station. Hundreds of them from Kolar, Chickaballapura and other distant localities could now take the cheaper rail option.

Mega block on elevated fly over. Most likely impact of Jayadeva Fly over demolition.

Please note; just like any other infrastructure project in Bengaluru the notice does NOT say the duration of the road closure. Same like the 'white topping racket'.

When this comes up Ola / Uber are going to cry bitter tears of frustration. I wouldn't be surprised if some "taxi chaalakara karmikulara sangha" were to start an agitation against their loss of livelihood due to nobody wanting to take a cab to the airport any longer.

I doubt it'll make too much difference to their business (or consequently to airport road traffic!).

It'll take some time before the Indian Railways rolls out trains in sufficient frequency to make this a viable alternative to the cabs and the airport buses. The airport buses are already doing a great job, but there will always be enough takers for the cabs because the majority of people want/need the convenience of door-to-airport pickup-drop either because of luggage or just because they are not keen on the extra effort/time it takes to use public transport. I have a friend who lives literally walking distance from an airport bus pickup stop and he still uses cabs to get to the airport or gets his driver to drop him! Also, a significant number of cab clients are those who travel on business and charge it to their company, so that segment will continue to use cabs.

But fortunately, it'll give those of us who are fed up of the traffic mess (of which Ola/Uber are a BIG part!), another alternative to get to the airport! And it will be a real benefit to those who work at the airport too.

Concur thoughts of am1m. I doubt it will make any significant difference to the taxis. People will still keep using taxis as trains cannot go everywhere and wont run at all times and the door to door convenience of the taxi matters as well.

On the other hand, if they put up a grand terminal somewhere in the city and connect that to the airport and allow people to check-in there (just like you can do at New Delhi Railway Station and take the airport metro) then that could be a game changer.

New Delhi's Airport Metro - or an even better example is the Hong Kong Airport Express. You can checkin downtown and ride a comfortable, modern, air conditioned train to be in the station in far less time than it would take to ride in a typical broken down indica with a driver who is usually tired and sleepy during late night departures.
