re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

The roads seem to be swarming with cops all of a sudden. On Monday, I passed some 6 police checking points along OMR/ECR/Kamakshi hospital road. Finally got stopped at midnight on ECR. checked the boot, asked where I was coming from, where I was going, and let off.

They set up a whole booth in the middle of the road on OMR (with a shamiana! ) and are still checking today.

Is something happening, or are they just financing their festival purchases

No specific reason for this checking as there was no checking in other parts of the city. Might be because of Bakrid festival today. Otherwise, unusual of a week day checking, as generally I find them during weekends waiting to pounce on drunken drivers.

Guess, Its due to Narendra Modi's visit on this week. Oct 18th.

Yes. Today we experienced lot of police checking and barricades and particularly in and around guindy area. I think this must be in relation to visit of Modi on 18th. A good no of police patrol throughout the city.

For the last two days, there is an additional police barricade set up in the already congested road after crossing the Vandular bridge. Daily 20 mins more is consumed in terms of fuel and time while coming towards Chennai.
Is it really / Only Modi's visit, the main reason?

What if you gave the wrong credentials? What if you were carrying something underneath your seat or even under the hood?

That's the pathetic state of security vigil in our country.

The commoners are always the most vulnerable lot

Well search me. I too was asked to give the same info and the cop asked me to give a deep breathe (he was checking for alcohol use-DND -no offense meant but what worried me is that the cop mistook chewing gum smell for Alcohol and his superior who came gave the guy a real dressing down and apologized to me. Kudos to such Cops who are diligent in duty.

how does it matter. Knowing how the traffic works, except the ECR i am guessing all other places will be a hell

It appears he is going towards saidapet and not the other way around which means traffic towards tambaram should be ok while traffic to the city is going to be like hell..or should i say NORMAL

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Found some details of Na Mo visit to Chennai today - so here are the places and times to avoid:

Source: http://newindianexpress.com/nation/C...cle1842077.ece

"Sources said Modi would land in Chennai at 3.20 pm. The State unit of the BJP, which surprised many in Tamil Nadu through its massive show of strength in Tiruchy, has pulled all stops to give him a rousing reception at the Chennai airport. “We are expecting to take at least 2,000 people to the airport to welcome him,” said a State leader. The BJP leader will then move to Kamalalayam, the State headquarters of the party in T Nagar. There, he is expected to deliver an hour-long pep talk to 150 office bearers and outline the strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.

After the meeting, Modi will head to the auditorium at the University of Madras where he is set to deliver the 11th Nani Palkhivala Memorial Lecture.

Sources in the Nani Palkhivala Memorial Trust told Express that Modi’s lecture has been titled ‘India and the World’. He is expected to touch upon varied issues, including foreign policy. But the emphasis is likely to be on the economic situation and it’s effect on India’s image. After the talk, Modi will board the 9 pm flight to New Delhi."
